of dreams about dolphins are nightmares

Dolphins are one of the few wild animals that seem to enjoy our company, swimming up to boats, riding the wave at the bow, and staring back at us through the glass. Dreaming about dolphins usually borrows that feeling. It tends to point to ease with your own emotions, to friendship and play, or to help that turns up just when you need it, and most people wake from one feeling lighter than they went to sleep.

It isn't always a happy dream, though. A dolphin stuck in a tank, washed up on a beach or turning on you changes the reading completely, and the details decide it. Were you in the water with it or watching from a boat? Who else was there, and what did the dolphin seem to want from you?

The dream dictionary

Dreaming about dolphins usually points to being at ease with your feelings, to friendship and play, or to help turning up when you need it. A dolphin in trouble (stranded, trapped, attacking) turns the reading around: something easy and joyful in your life feels threatened or held back.

What dreaming about dolphins means

A dolphin lives in the sea but breathes air like us, so it spends its life moving between the surface and the deep. Most of its meanings in dreams come from that, and from how social dolphins are.

At ease with your feelings

Dreams so often use water for emotion that a dolphin, which is completely at home in it, is a picture of someone who's comfortable with their feelings. If you swam easily alongside it, you may be in a good place emotionally, able to dive into hard feelings and come back up. And if the water felt deep but you weren't scared, that's worth noticing, especially after a hard stretch.

Friendship and play

Dolphins live in pods, hunt together and play for what looks like the fun of it, surfing waves and tossing bits of seaweed. A dream full of playful dolphins is often about the people you feel free with, or about wanting more of that. Who were you with in the dream? Their faces (or the lack of any) tell you a lot about whether you have that kind of company right now.

Help that arrives

Stories of dolphins guiding lost swimmers or circling someone in trouble are as old as the Greeks, who told of the singer Arion, thrown overboard by sailors and carried to shore on a dolphin's back. A dolphin that came to you in a dream is often about support, someone you can lean on or a part of you that knows how to get through. If you were struggling in the water before it arrived, you may have more people in your corner than you feel you do.

Being understood

Each bottlenose dolphin has its own signature whistle, which works a little like a name, and dolphins call each other with them. A dolphin dream where you felt you could understand it, or it understood you, is often about communication, being heard without having to explain. That's a common dream when someone close has stopped listening.

Dreaming about swimming with dolphins

This is the dolphin dream people search for most, and it's usually a good one. Swimming with dolphins is about being in your element, going deeper into your feelings, a relationship or a creative project, with company that makes it easy. If the dolphins led you somewhere, ask where you feel pulled to go. But if you couldn't keep up, the dream may be about a group or a partner moving faster than you can manage.

Dreaming about dolphins jumping out of the water

A dolphin leaping clear of the waves is joy you can see from far away. In a dream it tends to mark a moment of lift, like good news, relief after a long worry, or a feeling that's coming up to the surface after being underwater for a while. Several dolphins jumping together are often about shared happiness, like a family event or a team that's finally working.

Dreaming about a dolphin attacking you

Dolphins look like they're smiling, but the smile is just the shape of their face, and wild ones can be rough, especially males. A dolphin that bit or rammed you is often something you trusted that turned. It might be a friend whose teasing went too far, or a fun situation (a party, a flirtation, a group chat) that suddenly felt unsafe. The dream asks where friendliness has been hiding pressure.

Your dream stays private and is never shared.

Dreaming about a dead or stranded dolphin

A dolphin on a beach, out of water and unable to get back, is an easy, joyful part of you stuck where it can't breathe. Look for where you feel out of your element, in a job that doesn't suit you or a relationship that has dried up. A dead dolphin can also be grief, the end of a friendship or of a time you were happy. If you pushed it back into the sea, you're already trying to rescue something.

Dreaming about a dolphin in a pool or a tank

A dolphin in a swimming pool or an aquarium is a free, social animal living in a small, hard box. In a dream it often points to your own sense of being boxed in, by routine or rules, or by someone else's idea of who you should be. Was it performing tricks? Then ask where you've been putting on a show to keep people happy.

Dreaming about a baby dolphin

Dolphin calves swim pressed against their mother's side for months, so a baby dolphin often points to closeness and care. It can be about a child or a pregnancy, or about a new friendship you want to protect. If the calf was alone, the dream is more likely about feeling unprotected yourself.

Dreaming about dolphins according to Jung and Freud

Dolphins aren't on either man's list, but both left ideas that fit one, and both start in the water.

Jung on dolphins

Of all the symbols for the unconscious, Jung found water the most common, and the unconscious is the part of the mind that stays out of sight below the surface.[1] Applying that idea (ours, not his), a dolphin is a go-between, an animal that lives in the depths and still comes up to breathe and to look at you, so a dolphin dream is about contact with that hidden side going well. His essay on the mother archetype also lists helpful animals in general among the mother symbols,[1] and a dolphin that circles a swimmer in trouble belongs in that family.

Freud: water, birth and a plain wish

Freud wrote that a dream shows birth as an entry into water or an exit from it, and that small animals can stand for small children.[2] A baby dolphin pressed against its mother's side puts both in one scene (our application, not his), and he'd have asked whose child it is. For a pod leaping beside your boat he'd have looked for last week's nature film or aquarium visit first, then for the wish, and playing with an animal that wants your company is about as plain a wish as dreams get.

Other readings

Calvin Hall, an American psychologist, read dreams as a picture of the dreamer's self-image and view of the world, and held that a dream's setting carries the dreamer's view of that world, so a turbulent one turns into storms and raging seas and a benign one into serene nature.[3] Read his way, the water around the dolphin matters as much as the dolphin. A calm, clear ocean with company in it is a friendly world, and a tank or a rough sea is a different view.

Questions to ask about your dolphin dream

Dolphins only stay in a dream for a moment, so it helps to write down what you remember before going through these.

  • Were you in the water with the dolphins, or watching from outside?
  • Was the dolphin free, trapped, hurt or aggressive?
  • How did the water feel: clear, dark, calm, rough?
  • Who were you with, and who in your life feels like that kind of company?
  • What's been lifting you up lately, or holding you under?

Oniri works from answers like these when it reads your dream, so a dolphin you swam with and one you watched in a tank get read as the very different dreams they are. And if a shape in the water turned into something with teeth, there's a separate page on sharks.

Frequently asked questions

What do dreams about dolphins mean?

Most dolphin dreams are about feeling at home with your emotions, about friendship, or about help close by. Swimming or playing with dolphins is usually a good-feeling dream about ease and connection. A dolphin that's stranded, caged or hurt points to something joyful in your life that's under pressure.

Is dreaming about dolphins a good sign?

It's usually a pleasant dream, and most people wake from it feeling lighter. A dream can't promise good luck, though. Take it as a sign of where you feel well, which people and which parts of your life feel like open water right now.

What does a dolphin mean spiritually in a dream?

In ancient Greece, dolphins were said to carry the rescued and guide sailors, and early Christian art sometimes used the dolphin as a sign of Christ carrying souls to safety. So in a spiritual reading, a dolphin is a guide or a rescuer. Ask where in your life you'd welcome one.

What does it mean to dream about a dolphin attacking you?

It usually means something you trusted, a friend or a situation that felt safe, has turned rough. Real dolphins can be aggressive, so the dream isn't as strange as it feels. Ask where play has turned into pressure, or friendliness into something you can't say no to.

Quick Analysis

Your dream seems to reflect feelings of fear, paranoia, and trust issues, particularly around friends and social situations. Running around the restaurant could symbolise an attempt to escape or avoid situations where you feel threatened or uncomfortable. The presence of your family and boyfriend may point to how much their support and protection matter to you.

The moment you confronted the girl who took your money and found common ground in the same bands suggests a desire for resolution, and a hope that conflict can give way to understanding.

Questions

In the dream you were constantly moving, running through the restaurant, never quite settling anywhere. When you woke up, did that restlessness feel familiar to anything happening in your life right now?

Yeah, I’ve been job-hunting for two months and it feels like I can never switch off or relax.
