Crabs don't make most lists of famous dream symbols, but plenty of people dream about them, very often after a beach holiday, a seafood dinner or a nature documentary. When the dream is doing more than replaying the day, dreaming about crabs usually comes down to how you protect yourself. A crab is a soft animal in hard armor that walks sideways and grips with its claws, and each of those habits gives the dream something to say about you.

So the details decide it. Being pinched is a different dream from watching a hermit crab change shells, and a giant crab blocking your way isn't the same as a beach full of small ones. Where you were, what the crab did and how it made you feel are what turn a crab into your crab.

The dream dictionary

Dreaming about crabs usually points to one of three things: a guard you're keeping up, something you're approaching sideways instead of facing, or a worry that has hold of you and won't let go. What the crab did decides which, and so does whether you'd been near the sea or a plate of crab that week.

What dreaming about crabs means

We don't usually think of crabs as having much personality, but our language is full of them. People are "crabby" when they snap, they "come out of their shell" when they relax, and they move "crabwise" when they approach something without looking at it straight. The readings below follow those habits.

A guard you're keeping up

A crab's whole body is a defense. If the crab in your dream was hiding in its shell or rearing up with its claws open, think about where you or someone close to you is on guard. It might be you after a hurt, unwilling to let anyone close for a while, or it might be a partner or parent who goes hard and snappy whenever a certain subject comes up. The dream often shows the soft animal under the shell too, which is a reminder of what the armor is protecting.

Something you're approaching sideways

Most crabs walk sideways, because their legs bend outwards, and that walk is one of the most useful readings. A crab scuttling around you, never quite coming closer, can be you circling a conversation, a decision or a bill you know you'll have to face. Have you been doing everything except the one thing? Then the crab may be you.

A worry that won't let go

Claws grip, and a crab's grip can be hard to undo. A crab that held on to you, or that you couldn't shake off, tends to go with a worry, a grudge or a person that has hold of you. And a crab can drop a whole claw to escape a predator, then grow it back over the next few moults, which is worth knowing if you dreamed of a crab losing a claw. Sometimes letting go costs something and you recover anyway.

Growing out of an old shell

To grow, a crab has to back out of its whole shell and wait, soft and exposed, while a new one hardens. That stage lasts days and it's when crabs are most in danger (it's also when fishermen catch the "soft-shell" crabs that end up in restaurants). A soft or shell-less crab in a dream often goes with a change that has left you feeling unprotected, like a move, a new job or the end of a relationship, before you've grown into the new version of your life.

Dreaming about a crab pinching you

A pinch is the crab dream that wakes people up. It usually means the thing you were guarding against has reached you, or that someone who was already defensive has finally snapped. Where it pinched you is worth a thought. A pinch on the hand often goes with something you were reaching for, a job or a person, that bit back. A pinch on the foot points more to where you're going, and whether the path feels safe. But if the pinch didn't hurt much, the dream may be saying the reaction you fear is smaller than you think.

Dreaming about crabs crawling on you

Crabs crawling over your body are less about one danger than about that skin-crawling feeling of lots of small things, like messages, tasks or little irritations, each harmless and together hard to bear. It's the crab version of dreams about insects and spiders swarming. Ask what has been "getting under your skin" lately. But if you calmly brushed them off, you may be coping better than you think.

Dreaming about a giant crab

Size in our dreams tracks how big a problem feels, and a giant crab is a defensive problem that has grown too big to walk around. In Greek myth, Hera sent a giant crab called Karkinos to nip at Heracles' feet while he fought the Hydra. He crushed it underfoot, and she put it among the stars as the constellation Cancer. That's not a bad picture of what a giant crab often is in a dream, an irritation that turns up just when you're busy with something much bigger.

Dreaming about lots of crabs

Crab fishermen have long said you don't need a lid on a bucket of crabs, because when one starts to climb out the others pull it back down. People call this "crab mentality", the group that won't let any one member get ahead. If your dream was full of crabs scrabbling over each other, look at your friends, your family or your workplace, and ask whether you're being held back, or whether you're one of the crabs doing the pulling.

Dreaming about eating crab

Eating crab is a lot of work for a little meat, and a dream of cracking shells at a table often goes with effort and reward. If you were enjoying it, it can be about a hard-won result paying off, or simply about celebration, since crab feasts are a summer ritual on many coasts. If you couldn't get the shell open, or cut yourself on it, think about something you're trying to get into, a person or a project, that keeps itself closed. And if you ate crab the night before, the dream is probably just your dinner.

Dreaming about a hermit crab

Hermit crabs have no shell of their own, so they live in empty seashells and move house each time they outgrow one. When a bigger shell turns up, they've been seen lining up by size, so each crab can step into the shell left behind by the one ahead of it. A hermit crab in a dream is very often about home, a move, a place you've outgrown, or the feeling of living in someone else's space (a parent's flat, a partner's house) and not quite fitting.

Dreaming about a dead crab

Many of the "dead crabs" people find on beaches are not dead at all, they're empty shells left behind after a moult (the crab is usually alive and a size bigger somewhere nearby). A dead or empty crab in a dream can mean the same thing, an old defense you no longer need, or a version of yourself you've already left. If the dead crab upset you, though, it may be about a loss, especially of something connected to the sea, a childhood beach or the person who took you there.

Crabs in dreams and the Cancer star sign

The star sign is a crab too, so a crab dream sometimes turns out to be about a person. If you're a Cancer, or someone close to you is, the dream may simply be about them. Astrology calls the sign protective, home-loving and quick to retreat into its shell, which matches the animal well. The illness got the same name from the ancient Greek word for crab, and that link frightens some people after a crab dream. But a dream can't diagnose anything, and a real symptom belongs with a doctor.

Dreaming about crabs according to Jung and Freud

Neither man left a crab reading to quote. Everything below is their ideas applied to the animal, and said as such.

Jung: the shell as persona

A crab wears its defenses on the outside, which makes it a fair picture of what Jung called the persona, the face we put on for other people.[1] Read through that idea, a crab hardened in its shell is a persona doing its job a little too well, and the soft crab that has backed out of its old shell is the stretch between two masks. The sea adds to it. In Jung's view water is the commonest symbol for the unconscious, so a crab coming up out of the surf or the sand is something rising from there.

Freud: the beach, the dinner and the pinch

The day residue, Freud's term for what a dream picks up from the previous day,[2] is the likeliest explanation for a crab (a beach holiday, a seafood dinner, a nature documentary). His symbol list has no crab. The nearest animals on it, the fish and the snail, were genital symbols for him, which he would have set beside your own associations and not above them. So his first questions are plain ones: what does a crab bring to mind, and who in your life pinches?

Other readings

After five decades of research on sleep, dreams and nightmares, the Tufts psychiatrist Ernest Hartmann argued that a dream pictures a feeling, and gave vulnerability as an example. Among the images he listed for it were a small animal bleeding in the road and shellfish with their shells torn off,[3] which is close to the soft, shell-less crab in the section above.

Questions to ask about your crab dream

Dreams tend to follow what fills your days,[4] so start with the obvious question (did you see a crab recently?) and then go further, because the same crab can be a holiday memory for one person and a grudge for another. If you want more on how dreams borrow from waking life, there's a post on exactly that.

  • Was the crab hiding, attacking, escaping or just walking past?
  • Did it pinch you, and where?
  • Was it one crab, a giant one or a crowd of them?
  • Where were you: by the sea, at home, at a table?
  • Who in your life has their claws up right now, and is it you?

Oniri asks you about the dream's setting and your own life before it reads the dream, so a crab on your bathroom floor gets a different reading from one on a beach.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to dream about crabs?

Most crab dreams are about defense, avoidance or holding on. The shell points to a guard you or someone else is keeping up, the sideways walk to something you keep circling, and the claws to a worry, grudge or person you can't shake off. If you'd been at the seaside or eaten crab recently, the dream may also be replaying your day.

Does dreaming about a crab mean cancer?

No. The disease took its name from the Greek word for crab, and the star sign Cancer is a crab too, but a dream can't diagnose anything. If a crab dream left you worried about your health, the worry itself is worth noticing, and a doctor is the right place to take a real symptom.

Is a crab dream good or bad?

Neither, on its own. A crab that pinched you or chased you tends to go with stress, while a crab that moved out of its shell, or one you watched calmly on the sand, is often about change and growth. How you felt in the dream is the best guide.

Why do I keep dreaming about crabs?

A recurring crab dream usually means the thing it stands for hasn't moved: the same argument you keep avoiding, the same person who keeps their guard up, the same worry. Write each dream down and compare them. When the crab starts behaving differently, it often follows a change in your waking life.
