Zombies are a young monster, far younger than ghosts or demons, and in a few decades of films, series and games they've become one of the most common nightmares going. Dreaming about zombies is rarely about death. It usually means you feel drained, swamped by demands that keep coming, or stuck going through the motions, or that someone close to you seems to have switched off.

Which one depends on what happened in the dream. A whole city of the undead is a different dream from a single zombie in your kitchen, and being bitten isn't the same as cutting your way through a horde. And since zombie dreams so often follow a film or a game, it's worth asking first what you watched or played in the last few days.

What dreaming about zombies means

The zombie started in Haitian folklore as the zonbi, a dead person raised by a sorcerer and made to work without a will of their own. Many historians link the figure to the memory of plantation slavery. The modern version, slow and hungry and endless, came from cinema, beginning with a low-budget horror film in the late 1960s. Your dream probably draws on both halves, the person with nobody home and the crowd that never stops.

Running on autopilot

We call ourselves zombies before the first coffee, after a night shift or at the end of a month with a newborn, and dreams take the joke seriously. If the zombies in your dream were slow, blank and shuffling, ask where you've been doing the same. Are you getting through days without being present for any of them? Is a job or a routine taking everything and giving nothing back? A zombie dream is often the first place that kind of tiredness shows up.

Too much at once

One zombie is easy to deal with, but the danger in every zombie story is the number. That makes the horde a good picture of overload, the emails, the bills, the family requests, all manageable alone and impossible together. If you kept fighting and more kept coming, the dream is likely about a life with more demands than hours.

Losing yourself to the crowd

Zombies spread by turning you into one of them, and that's a real fear in waking life too. People dream of being bitten when they're starting a new job, joining a new group or slipping into habits they used to criticize in others. The question is whether you're afraid of becoming like the people around you, cynical or checked out or just like everyone else.

Something that won't stay dead

A zombie is a body that should have stayed buried. So it can also be a problem you thought was over (an old debt, an argument, an ex who keeps messaging) that keeps getting back up. If you recognized the zombie, start there.

Dreaming about a zombie apocalypse

The zombie apocalypse is the most searched zombie dream, and it's usually about how unsettled the world feels. People tend to have it during uncertain times, like a pandemic, a war on the news, a layoff or a move, when ordinary life suddenly feels fragile. But many people also notice something odd on waking, which is that parts of the dream were exciting. An apocalypse clears away work, bills and every other obligation, and leaves only survival and a few people you trust. If you enjoyed the dream, ask what you'd love to be free of.

Dreaming about zombies chasing you

No nightmare is more widely shared than the chase, which more than four out of five students reported in one Canadian survey.[1] Zombies make perfect pursuers because they never tire and never give up, which is exactly how a long-running worry feels. If, as one theory has it, our dreams drill us for danger,[2] a zombie is about the easiest danger there is to drill against. Like any chase dream, ask what you've been running from. If you kept just ahead of them, you're probably coping, if only just.

Dreaming about being bitten by a zombie

Being bitten, and knowing you're about to turn, is a dream about change you don't want. It often comes with burnout, when you can feel yourself becoming flatter and more tired, or when a job or a relationship is turning you into someone you don't recognize. Where you were bitten can add a little. A bite on the hand may point to something you touched or took on, a bite on the neck to something that feels closer to your sense of self. And if you hid the bite from the others, think about what you're hiding from people around you.

Dreaming about killing zombies

Killing zombies is usually a coping dream, and many people wake from it feeling oddly good. You're dealing with the threat, task by task, without stopping to think. If you'd been playing a video game with zombies in it, the dream may simply be the game carrying on in your sleep. But if killing them felt hard because they had familiar faces, the dream may be about cutting off people or parts of your past, and how much that costs you.

Your dream stays private and is never shared.

Dreaming about hiding from zombies

Hiding (boarding up windows, holding your breath in a cupboard, staying very quiet in an attic) tends to go with avoidance. Something is coming that you'd rather not face, so you're making yourself small and waiting it out. Who was hiding with you? Your survival group in a zombie dream is often a fair picture of who you'd turn to in a real crisis, and it may hold some surprises.

Dreaming about a family member as a zombie

Seeing your mother, father, partner or child as a zombie is one of the most upsetting versions of this dream. It usually doesn't mean you think badly of them. More often it's about someone who has changed in a way that feels like a loss, through depression, addiction, illness or dementia, a person who is still there but doesn't seem fully present. These dreams can be a kind of grief for someone who's still alive, and they're worth being gentle with.

Dreaming about zombies in your house

When zombies get into your house, the strain has reached your private life. It may be stress from work that you bring home every evening, or a household where people pass each other without really talking. If you were trying to keep them out, look at what you're trying to protect, whether that's your family time, your sleep or your one quiet room.

Dreaming about zombies according to Jung and Freud

The film zombie arrived decades after both men died, so what follows is their ideas pointed at it, with no reading of theirs to lean on.

Jung: a persona with nobody behind it

Jung called the mask you wear to get through the day, the role you play at work or in public, the persona.[4] A zombie fits it uncomfortably well, since the clothes, the walk and the routine are all still there and nobody is home. Read that way, the dream asks where you've played a part for so long that the person underneath has stopped answering, like the colleague who replies to every email on autopilot, or you after a year of being only the reliable one. He also trusted what the dreamer links to an image over what a reference book says, so notice whose face and clothes the zombie wore before you settle on a reading.

Freud: the wish under the horde

Freud held that every dream takes some of its raw material from the day before, the "day residue",[3] and zombies show it plainly: a series before bed, a game, a friend describing a film. What interested him was the next step, why the mind picked that image to carry whatever you were feeling. He read a dream as a wish in disguise, and a horde that wipes out the emails, the school run and the rent can hide a wish for the demands to stop, with fear as the cover.

Other readings

Antti Revonsuo, the Finnish researcher behind the threat simulation theory of dreaming, argues that we dream danger so we'll be quicker when the real thing comes.[2] Zombie dreams fit the idea well, being full of escape routes, barricades and choices about whom to trust, and plenty of people wake from one with a survival plan they never asked for. Artemidorus, a Greek dream reader of the 2nd century whose five-book Oneirocritica has survived, gave the older version of the dead walking again: he read it as a sign of uproar and losses, since the returned would want their property back.[5]

Questions to ask about your zombie dream

Before deciding what your zombie dream means, check the obvious (a film, a series, a game) and then go a little further.

  • Was it one zombie, a few or a whole world of them?
  • Were you running, hiding, fighting, or already turning?
  • Did any of the zombies have a face you knew?
  • Who was with you, and could you trust them?
  • Where in your life do you feel drained, swamped or on autopilot?

Oniri goes over questions like these with you before reading your dream, so a zombie horde after a long week at work isn't read the same way as one after a horror marathon. And if the nightmares keep coming back, there are practical ways to stop nightmares worth trying.

Frequently asked questions

What do dreams about zombies mean?

Most zombie dreams are about exhaustion, overwhelm or losing yourself. A horde can stand for demands that keep coming however many you deal with, a single zombie for someone who seems to have switched off, and being bitten for a fear of becoming like the people around you. They're almost never about death.

Why did I dream about zombies?

Often because you watched, played or read something with zombies in it, since dreams borrow freely from the last few days. If you hadn't, look at your energy and your workload. People dream of zombies in stretches of burnout, poor sleep or endless to-do lists, when they feel like they're running on autopilot themselves.

Is a zombie apocalypse dream a bad sign?

No. It doesn't predict disaster. It usually reflects how unsettled the world or your own life feels, and some people even enjoy these dreams, because an apocalypse wipes out the everyday duties that weigh on them. Ask which part of the dream you felt most: the fear, or the relief.

Why do I keep having zombie nightmares?

Recurring zombie nightmares usually track an ongoing strain, the job that never lets up, a home that doesn't feel calm, or a lot of zombie films. Cutting horror before bed helps some people. If the nightmares come often and wreck your sleep, they're worth raising with a doctor, as nightmares respond well to treatment.
