Cooking is one of the few everyday jobs that ends up being about other people even when you do it alone, since most of what we cook gets shared. So dreaming about cooking usually comes down to care, either the care you give (feeding a family, hosting, looking after someone who's ill) or the care you'd like a little more of. It can also be about making something, a plan or a change you're putting together one step at a time.
What you cooked and how it turned out decide most of the reading. A pot of rice you watched patiently isn't the same dream as a dinner that burned while the guests waited, and who you were cooking for matters as much as the food. The details of your own kitchen, and what's been happening around your table lately, will tell you which way it leans.
The dream dictionary
Dreaming about cooking usually points to care, the kind you give other people or the kind you'd like more of. It can also be about something you're putting together slowly, like a plan or a change, and how the food turned out shows how you feel it's going.

Cooking turns raw things into something people can live on, and it takes time, heat and attention, which is why a cooking dream so often lines up with something or someone you're looking after.
Looking after people
If you were cooking for a partner, your kids or a crowd of relatives, the dream is usually about your role in their lives. Did it feel generous, or like a chore nobody thanked you for? A dream where you cook and cook while everyone else sits down can be a fair picture of a month where you've been carrying the household. And cooking for someone you've fallen out with is often a wish to make peace, since a meal is the oldest way people have of doing that.
Something you're cooking up
English uses the kitchen for plans all the time: you cook up a scheme, an idea is half-baked, something is a recipe for disaster, and when a project finally works, now you're cooking. A dream of following a recipe step by step often comes while you're building something in waking life (a business, a move, a new routine), and whether the dish came together is how you feel about its chances.
Hunger and your own body
Sometimes the reading is simpler. Dreams follow what's on your mind during the day,[1] so if you've been dieting, fasting or skipping meals, a dream full of food on the stove may be your appetite talking. Compare what you cooked with what you actually eat, because a dream of fresh vegetables after weeks of takeout can be a wish for a change.
Dreaming about cooking rice
Rice is the dish you can't hurry. Lift the lid too soon or use too much water and it turns to mush, and leave it too long and it sticks and burns at the bottom. So a rice dream is often about patience, about something in your life that needs you to leave it alone for a while. In much of Asia rice is so basic that "have you eaten rice?" is an everyday way of asking how someone is, so if you grew up with that, the dream may be closer to home and family than to food.
Dreaming about cooking fish
Fish is delicate to cook, falls apart if you handle it too much and goes from raw to overdone very quickly. A dream of cooking it can be about a situation that needs a light touch, such as a conversation where one wrong word spoils everything. Fish also stands for plenty in many places (it's a New Year dish in China partly because its name sounds like the word for surplus), so a big fish on the table can be about abundance. See the fish page for the animal itself.
Dreaming about cooking for a lot of people
Cooking for a wedding, a party or a table that keeps getting longer is about how much you're expected to provide. If you were proud of the spread, the dream may reflect a role you enjoy. If the guests kept arriving and the pots stayed empty, look at where you've said yes to too much.

Dreaming about burning food
Burnt food is the classic cooking anxiety dream, and it tends to show up when you're juggling more than you can watch at once and worry that something important will be ruined while you deal with something else. If you burned food you were making for someone in particular, the worry may be about letting that person down.
Dreaming about cooking according to Jung and Freud
The oven is the part of a kitchen that both men wrote about.
Jung: the oven among the mother images
Jung's essay on the mother archetype puts the oven with the well, the spring and a ploughed field, all things that can stand for the mother.[2] The kitchen is the warm center of most homes, so it's easy to see why. A dream of cooking in your mother's kitchen, or with her recipes, can be about what you took from her and what you're making of it now.
Freud: the oven and the womb
Freud listed ovens alongside boxes, cases and cupboards as symbols of the womb.[3] Read his way, a dream that centers on an oven, putting something in and waiting for it to be ready, can be about pregnancy, or about wanting or fearing it. He still put your own associations first, so if the oven just reminded you of your mother's kitchen, that comes before the symbol.
The spiritual meaning of cooking in dreams
Rice in the Jataka
The Jataka, the Buddhist tales of the Buddha's earlier births, tells of a king of Kosala who wakes from sixteen frightening dreams in one night, and the tenth is of rice cooking unevenly in a single pot.[4] The Buddha reads it as rain falling unevenly across a kingdom in some far-off age, and tells the king he has nothing to fear. The story exists to talk the king out of an animal sacrifice his brahmin advisers proposed, so it's no dictionary for your own pot of rice.
Questions to ask about your cooking dream
Think back to the stove and the people around it, because that's where your dream stops being anyone else's.
- Who were you cooking for, and did they eat?
- Did you know the recipe, or were you making it up?
- How did it turn out: perfect, raw, burnt?
- Whose kitchen was it?
- What have you been "cooking up" in your life lately?
Give Oniri the dish and the guest list along with the dream, because those are the first things it asks about.
Frequently asked questions
Is dreaming about cooking a good sign?
It's usually a warm dream, because cooking is about feeding and looking after people. It doesn't predict good or bad luck. If the meal went wrong in the dream, it's more likely a worry about how well you're coping with what you've taken on.
What does it mean to dream about cooking with someone who has died?
Cooking a dead parent's or grandparent's recipe with them is a common grief dream, and many people find it comforting. Recipes are one of the ways families pass things down, so the dream often comes when you're missing that person or taking over a role they used to have.
Why do I dream about cooking when I'm on a diet?
Dreams pick up what you think about during the day, and when you're cutting back, food is on your mind a lot. A dream of cooking or eating while dieting is usually plain hunger or longing, and it says nothing about your willpower.
