In almost every culture that has foxes, the fox is the clever one, the animal that gets what it wants by wit when it can't win by strength. Aesop's fox flatters a crow into dropping its cheese, and Reynard the Fox tricked his way through medieval Europe. So dreaming about foxes usually points to cleverness, either your own or that of someone you don't quite trust. Or it's about something wild getting close to your home.
How you felt about the fox is the first thing to settle. Admiring a fox that slipped past the dogs isn't the same dream as finding one among your chickens, or waking to its eyes shining in the dark garden. Then look at where it was, because a fox in the woods, one in the street and one in your kitchen each come a step closer to your private life.
The dream dictionary
Dreaming about foxes usually points to cleverness, either yours or that of someone you don't fully trust, or to something wild getting close to home. A fox that watched you calmly leans toward your own wits, while a fox that sneaked, stole or bit leans toward a person who's playing you.

Foxes live almost everywhere we do, in fields, forests and city centers, and they get by on being quick, quiet and adaptable. Those habits give the main readings.
Someone who's playing you
"Sly as a fox" and "a crafty old fox" are about people who get their way by charm and timing. If the fox in your dream felt sneaky, flattered you, or stole something while you looked away, the dream may be about a person like that. It could be a smooth colleague, a friend whose stories keep changing, or a salesman you said yes to too fast.
Your own wits
A fox doesn't fight its way through life. It watches, waits and finds the gap in the fence, which is how it survives in places that were never built for it. A calm fox in your dream, one you watched with interest or even followed, is often your own quick thinking. Is there a problem right now where strength won't help and cleverness will?
Something wild close to home
Foxes now live in many cities, raiding bins and crossing gardens at night. In winter the scream of a vixen has woken plenty of people who were sure someone was being attacked. A fox in your street or garden is often something untamed getting close to your home life, like a temptation, an outsider, or a part of you that doesn't fit the neat life you've built. And since an attractive person is "foxy", a fox dream that felt exciting more than frightening can simply be about desire.
Dreaming about a fox attacking or biting you
Foxes almost never attack people. A fox that bites you in a dream is often a person who seemed harmless, even charming, turning on you, or a clever plan (yours or someone else's) that backfired. If it bit the hand you held out, the dream is usually about a kindness or a deal that someone took advantage of.
Dreaming about a fox in your house or garden
The closer the fox comes, the more personal the dream. A fox in the garden is something circling your private life, while one in the kitchen or the bedroom has already got in. "A fox in the henhouse" is someone trusted with the very thing they'll take. If the fox went for your chickens or your food, ask who has more access to your life than they should.
Dreaming about fox cubs
A cub in a dream is often a young, playful kind of cleverness, like a child who's sharper than people think, or a new idea that's still finding its feet. If the cubs were alone, the dream may be about having had to grow up quickly.
Dreaming about a white or arctic fox
The arctic fox turns white in winter and brown in summer. So a white fox is a fox dressed for the season, but still the same fox underneath. In a dream it often points to someone, or a side of you, that blends in to get by. What in your life is changing its coat right now?

Dreaming about a dead fox
A dead fox is often cunning that has run out. It might be a scheme that failed, or a person who can no longer fool you because you've finally seen through them. It can also be your own wits running dry after a long stretch of having to be clever just to cope.
Dreaming about a tame fox
In Russia, scientists spent decades breeding silver foxes for tameness, and the foxes became friendly, wagging their tails and seeking out people the way dogs do. A tame fox in a dream is cleverness on your side, a sharp friend or advisor, or your own shrewd streak finally working for you. If it followed you like a pet, you may be learning to trust your instincts.
Dreaming about foxes according to Jung and Freud
A fox gets what it wants without a fight, and the ideas Jung and Freud are best known for each pick up a different part of that.
Jung: the fox as trickster
Jung described the trickster as an archetype that turns up as the fool, the clown or the shape-shifter, someone who breaks the rules and causes trouble that somehow leads somewhere.[1] He didn't name the fox, but Reynard and Aesop's fox play that part in all but title, so this is our application. Read his way, a fox that slipped past the dogs may be the part of you that wants to break a rule you've outgrown, and a fox that robbed you may be a person who plays by the trickster's rules without owning up to it.
Freud: getting away with it
In Freud's account, a dream is where a wish finally gets what it wanted.[2] A fox does that for a living, slipping past the dogs, taking the chicken and gone before anyone's awake, which is the picture of getting away with something. If you admired it, ask what you'd take if nobody were watching. His list also gives small animals to small children, often unwanted siblings,[2] and a cub is the one fox that really is small, so a cub in your dream could be applied to a child, or a younger sibling, in your life. He never wrote about foxes, and he'd have asked first whether you were glad the animal was there.
Other readings
Artemidorus, a Greek writer of the 2nd century who got his dreams, and what came of them, from marketplace diviners, set the wolf and the fox side by side in his dream book. The wolf, in his reading, was an open enemy, violent and grasping, and the fox an enemy of the same kind who plots in secret.[3] The split makes a handy test for your own dream, since you can ask whether the danger showed itself or waited.
The biblical and spiritual meaning of foxes in dreams
Folklore gives the fox two faces. In Japanese tales the kitsune is a fox spirit that grows more tails as it ages and can take human form, often as a beautiful woman, and foxes are the messengers of Inari, the god of rice, whose shrines are guarded by stone foxes all over Japan. The Bible's foxes are smaller and less glamorous.
Foxes in the Bible
The Song of Songs asks the lovers to catch "the little foxes, that spoil the vines", the small things that ruin something growing.[4] And when Jesus is warned that Herod wants to kill him, he calls Herod "that fox".[5] The first verse suits a dream about small damage adding up, and the second one suits a dream about someone in charge you can't trust.
Questions to ask about your fox dream
Where the fox was and what it was after usually decide the dream, so start there.
- Did you admire the fox, or distrust it?
- Was it in the wild, in a town, or inside your home?
- Did it take something, and what?
- Who in your life is charming, clever and hard to pin down?
- Where would cleverness help you more than effort right now?
Oniri talks through details like these with you before it offers a reading, so a fox you followed through the woods and a fox you caught at the bins aren't treated as the same animal.
Frequently asked questions
What do dreams about foxes mean?
Most fox dreams are about cleverness and trust. A calm fox tends to stand for your own wits, the quick thinking a situation needs, and a sly or thieving fox for someone around you who's cleverer, or less honest, than they seem. A fox near your home often points to something getting too close to what you care about.
Is a fox in a dream a good or bad sign?
Neither, since a dream can't bring luck. It's a dream about cunning, and cunning cuts both ways. If you admired the fox, the dream is usually on your side. If it made you uneasy, ask who in your life feels like a fox.
What does a fox mean spiritually in a dream?
Traditions differ. In Japan, foxes are the messengers of Inari, the god of rice, and folk tales tell of fox spirits who take human form. In the Bible, the 'little foxes' spoil the vines in the Song of Songs, and Jesus calls Herod 'that fox'. Most spiritual readings land on cleverness, which can protect or deceive.
