of dreams about tigers are nightmares

People often picture the tiger as a bigger, striped lion, but the two could hardly live more differently. A lion lives in a family and roars in the open, while a tiger hunts alone and arrives without a sound. That's the animal your dream picked, and dreaming about tigers usually points to power that works the tiger's way, quietly and up close, whether it's anger you haven't let out, desire, or a person who has more control over your life than you've admitted.

The tiger's mood is the first thing to look at. A tiger stalking you through long grass, a tiger asleep on your bed and a tiger you're stroking like a house cat are very different dreams. Then there's the question of whose power it is. Is it yours, or someone else's? The tiger rarely tells you, but your feelings in the dream usually do.

The dream dictionary

Dreaming about tigers usually points to power and to strong feelings that are hard to control, often anger or desire, either in you or in someone with real influence over your life. A tiger that hunts you tends to be about a threat or a person you feel at the mercy of, while a calm tiger beside you is often your own strength, finally on your side.

What dreaming about tigers means

Tigers are the largest cats alive, and they hunt by stalking, using their stripes to vanish into tall grass before they charge. Unlike most cats they swim well, and no two tigers have the same stripes. And they live alone (mothers and cubs aside), which makes them one of the animals we most admire and fear at the same time.

Anger you're holding in

William Blake wrote of the "Tyger Tyger, burning bright", and the tiger has been a picture of fierce feeling ever since. If you're the kind of person who rarely raises your voice, a tiger in your dream may be the anger you've swallowed, pacing behind the bars. Did the tiger feel like something you needed to escape, or like something you secretly envied? The answer often shows whether the anger frightens you or whether part of you wants to let it out.

Someone with power over you

A tiger dream is often about a person, usually one who holds real power, like a boss, a parent, a landlord or a partner who sets the rules. The "tiger mother", the parent who pushes a child hard, has become common English since the 2010s, and if your dream tiger watched you more than it attacked you, it may be that kind of pressure. Ask who in your life you'd never turn your back on.

Danger you didn't see coming

Tigers prefer to attack from behind, and in the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans, between India and Bangladesh, woodcutters and honey collectors once wore masks on the backs of their heads to confuse them. So a tiger that appeared out of nowhere, or one you only saw when it was already close, often points to a threat that caught you off guard. It might be bad news, a criticism, or a betrayal from someone you hadn't been watching (often someone you'd stopped worrying about).

Drive and desire

Not all of a tiger's power is threatening. People talk about having "the eye of the tiger" when they're hungry for something, and a tiger moving powerfully through your dream can be ambition, sexual energy or plain appetite for life. This reading fits when you felt thrilled rather than hunted, even if the tiger was a little too close for comfort.

Dreaming about a tiger attacking you

When the tiger goes from watching to attacking, the pressure in your life has usually gone from background to foreground. Something or someone has finally come for you, whether it's a confrontation, a deadline or a judgment you'd been dreading. But an attacking tiger can also be your own anger turned inward, which is often what anxiety and harsh self-criticism feel like from the inside. If you can't think of anyone who's attacking you, look at how you've been talking to yourself.

Dreaming about a white tiger

White tigers are Bengal tigers with a rare pale coat, almost all of them living in zoos, and many of them descended from a single white male caught in India in 1951. They're beautiful and bred for show, and the breeding has cost them their health. So a white tiger dream is often about rare power or talent that comes at a price, being admired for something that also isolates you. If the white tiger felt calm, though, the dream may be about that rare strength as a gift more than a burden.

Dreaming about a tiger chasing you

A tiger chasing you is a chase dream with a stalker in it. Tigers don't run long distances, they creep close and then charge, so the dream often begins with the feeling of being watched before it turns into running. One theory says predator dreams like this are the brain practicing escape while you sleep.[1] And the thing you're running from is usually more patient than you are, like a decision you keep putting off or a feeling you won't look at. Like other dreams of being chased, what happens when you stop running is the part worth noticing.

Dreaming about lions and tigers

Seeing both big cats in one dream usually means two different forces at once. A lion is power in public, social and loud, like a family head or the boss everyone answers to. A tiger is power in private, solitary and silent, like a passion or a grudge you don't show. Two strong parents, a public role and a private feeling, or two rivals pulling you in different directions can all take this shape, and which cat came closer is often the one that matters more.

Your dream stays private and is never shared.

Dreaming about a friendly tiger

Stroking a tiger, walking beside one, or riding one through a city is one of the most memorable dreams people have, and it's usually a good one. Strength that used to frighten you is now on your side, or you've learned to live with a part of yourself that once felt dangerous. But there's an old Chinese saying that once you ride a tiger it's hard to get off, so if the calm felt fragile, the dream may be about a situation you're managing well and can't safely leave.

Dreaming about a tiger in your house

A tiger indoors brings power or danger into your private life. It may be a family member's temper, or the feeling at home before a fight. But it can also be your own passion, something you've kept in the house that's much bigger than the house. A tiger asleep across a doorway, one that everyone steps over carefully, is a picture of a problem the whole household has learned to live around without ever naming.

Dreaming about a tiger cub

A tiger cub is power in miniature, cute now and dangerous later. Caring for one in a dream is often about something you're feeding that will grow (a talent, a business, a habit), or a resentment you've been keeping warm. If the cub played gently, the dream is about potential. And if it bit, ask whether something small in your life is already showing its teeth.

Dreaming about tigers according to Jung and Freud

What follows lays two of their ideas over a tiger dream, and says which parts are theirs and which are ours.

Jung: the tiger as your shadow

Jung distrusted ready-made lists of what a symbol means and held that the dreamer's own associations come first.[2] Of his ideas, the shadow comes closest to a tiger dream: everything about yourself you'd rather not claim. He found it arriving in dreams as someone who hunts you down, breaks in or simply doesn't belong, and a tiger that stalks you without a sound behaves exactly like one. If you're the kind of person who never raises your voice, the tiger may be the anger you've swallowed, and his idea of compensation (a dream balancing a one-sided waking attitude) points the same way: the politest person in the office is a likely candidate for a dream about the roaring animal. Read like this, the useful question is whether the tiger is the thing you fear or the thing you wish you could be, and a tiger that lets you stroke it would be the shadow beginning to be accepted.

Freud: the day residue and the wish

Freud's method starts with the day before, which he called the day residue, the scraps of waking life a dream is built from.[3] A tiger is often borrowed from somewhere specific (a documentary, a zoo trip, a child's picture book, a boss nicknamed after one), and he would ask what you saw or said that day before reading anything into it. His larger claim was that every dream hides a wish behind a costume, and a tiger that frightens you could be covering something you want, which matches the thrilled-rather-than-hunted version above. He read cats among the animals that stand for sexual organs, and a tiger is a very large cat, but that's our extension of his list and he never made it himself. He also insisted that the dreamer's own free associations come before any symbol list, so what the tiger brings to mind for you outranks all of this.

The spiritual meaning of tigers in dreams

No tradition left a fixed meaning for a dreamed tiger, but one Hindu text and its commentary come close to the subject.

Tigers in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad

The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, one of the oldest Upanishads, says the dreaming self may seem to enjoy itself, to laugh, or to see "frightful things", and the classic commentary by Shankara glosses those as lions and tigers.[4] The gloss is Shankara's, not the Upanishad's. The Upanishad itself treats frightening dreams (being overpowered, chased by an elephant, falling into a pit) as the mind conjuring, out of ignorance, terrible things it met while awake. Applied to a tiger dream, that sends you back to where you met the tiger first, in a person, a pressure or a feeling, which is also where this page starts.

Questions to ask about your tiger dream

Because a tiger can be your anger, your drive or someone else's power, it helps to work out which before you settle on a meaning.

  • Were you frightened of the tiger, thrilled by it, or calm?
  • Was it hunting you, ignoring you, or letting you touch it?
  • Where was it: in the wild, a zoo, a city, your own home?
  • Who in your life has a tiger's kind of power, quiet and close?
  • Is there a feeling you've been keeping caged?

Oniri brings up questions like these when you tell it a dream, and your answers are what keep a tiger at your heels from being read like a tiger at your side.

Frequently asked questions

What do tigers dream about?

Nobody knows, but tigers are mammals with REM sleep, and the best evidence from other animals is that they dream about their own day. When scientists switched off the sleep paralysis in house cats, the sleeping cats stalked and pounced, so a tiger's dreams most likely involve hunting too. More in do animals dream?

Is a tiger in a dream a good or bad sign?

Neither. A dream doesn't tell you what's going to happen. A tiger that attacked you points to a pressure or a person you feel overpowered by right now, and a calm tiger often points to strength or confidence you're growing into.

What does a tiger mean in a dream spiritually?

No tradition left a fixed meaning for a dreamed tiger. A classic commentary by Shankara on the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, one of the oldest Hindu texts, counts lions and tigers among the frightening things a sleeping mind conjures from what it met while awake. Read that way, a spiritual tiger dream comes back to your own feeling: a tiger that guarded you and one that stalked you are different dreams.

Why do I keep dreaming about tigers?

A tiger that comes back night after night usually means the same strong feeling or the same powerful person is still part of your days. Note whether the tiger keeps its distance, comes closer or calms down. Those changes often follow how you're handling the real situation.

What does it mean to dream about a black panther or a jaguar?

A black panther is a leopard or a jaguar with a black coat, and in dreams it works much like a tiger, with more secrecy. Where a tiger is power you can see coming, a black panther is power you only notice when it's close, like a rival, a desire or a fear you've kept out of sight.

Analyse rapide
