of dreams about birds are nightmares

Birds are the wild animals most of us see every day, on a windowsill, at a train station or in a park, and dreams use them more freely than almost any other creature. Dreaming about birds usually comes back to one of three things. It's about freedom, about news or a message on its way, or about a hope you're carrying and whether it can fly.

The kind of bird matters less than what it did. A bird soaring over you, a bird stuck inside your home and a bird lying dead on the ground are three different dreams, and so is a single bird compared with a whole flock. How you felt matters too, and so does whatever kept you busy that week, because those two decide between the readings below.

The dream dictionary

Dreaming about birds usually points to freedom (wanting it, having it or losing it), to news or a message you're waiting for, or to a hope you're carrying. What the bird was doing decides which: a bird in open sky is a different dream from one stuck in your house or lying dead on the ground.

What dreaming about birds means

We share our streets with birds but they live by different rules, and each of those rules gives a dream something to say. They leave the ground whenever they want. They sing, carry things, build nests and leave them, and for thousands of years people trained pigeons to carry their mail.

Freedom you have, or want

The most common reading is the obvious one, because flight is the thing we envy birds for. A bird gliding high and easily often shows up when you feel free, or when you badly want to (after a breakup, in the last weeks of a job you hate, during exams). Were you watching it from the ground? Then ask what's keeping you there. Dreams where you fly yourself, which nearly half of people remember having,[2] are the same wish with you in the bird's place, and flying dreams have their own page.

A message on its way

English says "a little bird told me" when news arrives from somewhere you can't name, and homing pigeons carried real messages in both world wars. So a bird that lands near you, sings at your window or drops something at your feet often goes with waiting. You're expecting a call, an exam result, an answer from someone, and the dream gives the waiting a shape.

A hope or a plan

Birds build a nest for one season and then leave it, which makes them a good picture for plans. A healthy bird that flies off is an idea you're ready to launch. And a bird that can't take off, one with a broken wing or one that keeps falling back, is often a project that's stalled, or a part of your life that hasn't had room to grow.

Your own mood

Miners used to carry canaries underground because the birds reacted to bad air long before people did. A sick, silent or struggling bird can work the same way in a dream, as an early warning about you. If you've been running on empty for weeks, the bird that won't sing may be the first place your tiredness shows up.

Dreaming about a dead bird

A dead bird is the most searched bird dream and usually the saddest. It tends to go with disappointment, a plan that fell through, a hope you've quietly let go of or a relationship that has stopped going anywhere. Where you found it matters. Was it in your hands, under your car, by your front door? A dead bird on your doorstep brings the loss close to home, while one you hit or killed by accident can point to guilt about something you ended. But window strikes are common in real life, so if you found a dead bird recently, the dream may simply be replaying it.

Dreaming about a bird in your house

A bird flying into the house was an omen of death in old British and Irish folklore. That fear is why many people search this one, but it's a superstition, and no dream can tell you that (a dedicated post looks at whether dreams can see ahead). What the dream usually shows is something from outside that has got into your private life, like news, a new person or a worry from work. If the bird was panicking and hitting the windows, look at where you feel trapped yourself. If it sat calmly on a shelf, the visitor may be welcome.

Dreaming about black birds

Black birds in dreams are usually crows, ravens or blackbirds, and they carry heavier readings than other birds. Ravens have a long reputation as birds of death and battlefields, but in Norse myth the god Odin sent two ravens out every day, named Thought and Memory, to bring back news of the world. That second reading is often the better fit. A black bird that keeps circling can be a thought you can't stop returning to, or a memory that wants attention. Crows also recognize human faces and remember people who threatened them, and a crow that watched you in the dream may be about feeling observed or judged. See crows for more on that bird alone.

Dreaming about a white bird

A white bird is nearly always read as a calmer sign. White doves stand for peace in most of the world (a Picasso dove was the poster for a peace congress in 1949), and the dove has carried hope since Noah's dove came back with an olive leaf. A white bird landing near you tends to show up after a conflict ends, or when you're ready for it to end. If it flew away from you, ask whether there's a peace you're still waiting for. Doves have a page of their own.

Dreaming about birds flying towards you

Birds flying straight at you bring something into your life, fast, and the feeling decides what it is. And if you were happy or curious, it's often good news or a chance you hadn't expected. If you ducked or covered your face, it's more likely to be a lot arriving at once, with demands and messages coming faster than you can deal with. A single bird coming towards you is usually one piece of news. A flock is everything else on your plate.

Your dream stays private and is never shared.

Dreaming about birds attacking you

Ever since Hitchcock's The Birds, a flock turning on people has been one of cinema's stock nightmares, and dreams borrow it. Birds peck rather than bite, so an attack is often about lots of small hurts (criticism, nagging, a group chat that never stops), and English even has "henpecked" for it. Who has been picking at you lately, and about what? One theory says that attack dreams are the brain rehearsing threats while we sleep,[1] and birds swooping from above make a good rehearsal because you can't see them coming.

Dreaming about a bird in a cage

A caged bird is the picture of limits, and it's also the title Maya Angelou chose for her memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. If the bird was yours, think about where you're holding yourself back, or where a job, a relationship or a family rule has closed the door. Opening the cage in the dream is usually a good sign, but if the bird stayed put after you opened it, ask what makes the cage feel safe. More in cages.

Dreaming about a baby bird

Baby birds and nests are about care and about how fragile new things are. A chick that fell out of its nest and needed your help often goes with something new you're responsible for (a child, a business, a first draft), and whether you managed to save it tells you how confident you feel. And for parents whose children are about to leave home, an empty nest in a dream says it plainly, since the English phrase for that moment came from birds.

Dreaming about birds according to Jung and Freud

Birds aren't what either man is remembered for in the way of symbols, so what follows is their ideas pointed at the dream.

Jung: the bird that comes in through the window

Jung read dream images as the unconscious speaking in its own picture language,[4] and a bird that flies into your kitchen and beats against the walls is that idea in miniature: something from outside your ordinary thinking, loose in a room that wasn't built for it. His habit with an image like that was amplification, setting it beside the myths and fairy tales that share it, and birds give him plenty to work with, from Noah's dove to messenger ravens. If your bird brought something, that route puts your dream next to the old messenger birds and asks what you're waiting to hear. He also distrusted ready-made lists like this one, so which bird it was to you comes first.

Freud: flight, small creatures and yesterday

Flying is one of the typical dreams Freud listed,[3] and a bird is flight at one remove, a creature doing from the sky what a flying dreamer does in person. So a dream where you only watched the bird is the same wish with you as the audience. In his list of symbols, small animals stand for small children, often a younger sibling nobody asked for. Birds aren't named there, but a chick on the pavement or a fledgling fallen from its nest sits close to it, and his method would look for someone small and dependent in your life. As ever, he wanted to know where you'd seen a bird lately, before any theory.

The biblical and spiritual meaning of birds in dreams

Birds in the Bible

The Bible's best-known birds are Noah's raven and dove, sent out to see whether the flood had gone down,[5] and the Spirit coming down "like a dove" at Jesus' baptism.[6] In Matthew, Jesus points to the birds of the air, which neither sow nor reap and are still fed.[7] And Genesis has its own bird dream. Pharaoh's baker dreamed of birds eating bread from a basket on his head, and the story ends badly for him.[8] The text tells a story about that one man; it doesn't say what your dream means.

Birds in the Talmud

In the Talmud a bird in a dream is a sign of peace, with Isaiah's birds hovering over Jerusalem to protect it as the proof text, and a darker verse is kept for the same image, the bird that wanders from its nest.[9] The Talmud's dream section counts every bird as a good sign except the owl and the eagle-owl.

Questions to ask about your bird dream

Before choosing a reading, go back over the dream with a few questions, because the same bird can mean freedom for one person and a nagging worry for another.

  • Was the bird free, trapped, hurt or dead?
  • Was it one bird or a flock, and was it coming towards you or leaving?
  • Where was it: in the sky, in your home, in your hands?
  • Did the kind or color of bird remind you of a person or a place?
  • What are you waiting for, or hoping for, right now?

Oniri goes through the same kind of questions with you before reading your dream, so the answer fits your bird and not a generic one.

Frequently asked questions

What do dreams about birds mean?

Most bird dreams are about freedom, a message or a hope. A bird flying free tends to mirror how free you feel, a bird bringing something points to news you're waiting for, and a hurt or caged bird usually stands for a plan or a part of you that can't get off the ground right now.

Is a bird in the house a sign of death?

No. The idea that a bird indoors announces a death is old British and Irish folklore, and it's a superstition, not something a dream can tell you. In a dream, a bird inside your home is far more often about something from outside that has got into your private life, or about you feeling trapped.

What does it mean when birds attack you in a dream?

Being pecked or swarmed by birds usually lines up with lots of small pressures at once: criticism, nagging, messages you haven't answered. Ask who or what has been picking at you lately. If one bird attacked, the dream is more often about one person.

What does a black bird mean in a dream?

A black bird, usually a crow or a raven, tends to carry heavier readings: worry, grief, or a thought you keep coming back to. It isn't a bad omen. In Norse myth the god Odin's two ravens were named Thought and Memory, which is a good place to start.

Do I dream about birds because I saw one?

Often, yes. Dreams borrow freely from the day before, so a bird at your window, a pigeon on the train or a nature documentary can turn up that night. It's still worth asking why your mind kept that image and not another one.
