A wedding is the biggest promise most people ever make in public, so it turns up in dreams at moments of commitment that have nothing to do with marriage. Dreaming about a wedding is usually about joining yourself to something, whether that's a person, a job, a city or a decision. Sometimes it's about two sides of you coming together after a long time apart.

The wedding itself tells you how that commitment feels. A happy day where everything goes right is a different dream from running late with the wrong dress, and marrying a stranger is nothing like marrying the love of your life. Who you were marrying, whether you wanted to be there, and what went wrong are the details that decide the reading, and your own dream is the only place to find them.

The dream dictionary

Dreaming about a wedding usually points to a commitment you're making or a big change you're stepping into, in love, at work or in how you see yourself. It doesn't predict a marriage or a death. How the day went, and who you were marrying, shows how you feel about the promise you're making.

What dreaming about a wedding means

Weddings mix two things that rarely sit together so openly, a private feeling and a promise made in front of everyone you know, from your grandmother to your oldest school friend. Most wedding dreams lean on one of them, and the four readings below cover the common ones.

A commitment you're making

People "tie the knot" with more than partners. A wedding dream often comes when you've signed a contract, taken on a mortgage, said yes to a job, or made a decision you can't easily reverse. If the wedding felt joyful, you're likely at peace with the choice, but a wedding with no music and no guests may show you're less sure. And if it felt like a trap, the dream may be telling you that part of you said yes too fast.

Two parts of you joining

A wedding is two people becoming one household, and dreams use that picture for joining things inside you too. Someone who has always been all logic may dream of marrying a wild, emotional stranger, and someone who never stops caring for others may marry someone selfish. Read that way, the person you marry in the dream is a quality you're trying to bring into your life.

A change in who you are

Weddings are a rite of passage, and for many people they come with a new name, a new home and a new role. Dreaming of a wedding can mark any change that big, such as becoming a parent, moving abroad or starting over after a divorce. The dream holds the ceremony for the old you handing over to the new one.

Your feelings about a real relationship

Sometimes a wedding dream is simply about weddings. Dreams pick up what fills our days,[1] so if you're engaged, planning a wedding or wondering where a relationship is going, the dream is likely that. People planning weddings dream about them constantly, often as disasters, and those dreams are about stress more than doubt.

Dreaming about your own wedding

Your own wedding is the most common version and the one people search for most. If it went well and you felt sure of the person beside you, the dream usually reflects a commitment you feel good about, in love or elsewhere. Pay attention to how much you were in charge. A wedding you planned yourself points to a choice that's really yours, and one where your family decided everything may be about a path you're taking because it's expected. If you couldn't see your partner's face, the dream is likely about the commitment itself, not about a particular person.

Dreaming about attending a wedding

Being a guest at someone else's wedding puts you on the sidelines of a big change. If it was a friend or a sibling, the dream is often about their life moving on and how you feel about that. You might feel happy for them, or a bit left behind, or worried you'll lose them to a new family. If you didn't know the couple, the wedding may stand for a change happening around you (at work, in your family) that you're watching more than taking part in. Did you feel a pang of envy at the reception? Then the dream may be about a commitment you'd like for yourself and haven't asked for yet.

Dreaming about a wedding dress

A wedding dress is about how you'll look on the day you make the promise, so dress dreams are so often about being seen. A beautiful dress that fits can show confidence in a new role. But a dress that's torn, dirty or the wrong size points to a fear that you're not ready, or that others will see you don't fit the part. Trying on dresses endlessly without choosing is a familiar dream for anyone stuck between options. And if you were in a wedding dress at someone else's wedding, ask where in your life you might be taking someone's spotlight, or wishing for it.

Dreaming about a wedding ring

A ring is a circle with no end, and it may be the most compact picture of a promise anyone has come up with. Small as it is, it carries a lot in dreams about commitment. Receiving one in a dream points to a commitment someone is offering you, and giving one to a commitment you're ready to make. Losing a wedding ring is a common anxiety dream about letting someone down or about a relationship slipping, and it rarely means anything is actually wrong. A ring that doesn't fit (too tight, or sliding off) says something about whether the commitment suits you.

Dreaming about marrying your ex

Marrying an ex in a dream can be confusing, especially if you're happily with someone else. It usually isn't a wish to get back together. More often it shows you've made peace with that relationship and taken in what it taught you, so the "marriage" is a kind of acceptance. But if you felt real longing in the dream, you may be missing something you had with that person (excitement, or the feeling of being understood). It's worth asking whether your current life has room for it.

Dreaming about marrying a stranger

Marrying someone you don't know is common and usually less alarming than it feels. The stranger often stands for a part of yourself. Or it's a new situation you're committing to before you fully know it (a job you accepted on instinct, a city you moved to sight unseen). Marrying someone you don't love, or the wrong person entirely, is a different dream. It tends to point to a commitment you made for the wrong reasons, or to a fear that you will.

Dreaming about a wedding going wrong

Running late, forgetting the rings, the groom or bride not showing up, a fight at the altar, rain on the dress. Disaster weddings are among the most common wedding dreams. Engaged people have them all the time. They're about pressure and the fear of failing in front of everyone, and they don't predict how your real wedding will go. Being left at the altar is a dream of abandonment, often about someone you're afraid will let you down. Getting cold feet and running away yourself usually means a doubt you haven't voiced.

Dreaming about a wedding and death

Many people search whether a wedding dream means death, and the belief behind it is old. English has a proverb, "dreams go by contraries", and folk dream books used it to read weddings as funerals and funerals as weddings. But it's a superstition with nothing behind it, and nobody has ever shown it to hold. If the wedding in your dream felt mournful, read the mood (something ending as something begins), and leave the prediction aside. There's more on what dreams of death usually mean on their own page.

Dreaming about a wedding according to Jung and Freud

Weddings aren't a symbol either man took up, but both have ideas that fit a dream about one.

Jung: the stranger you marry and the ring you wear

Read through Jung's idea of the anima and animus, the figure of the other sex who turns up in dreams, the stranger at the altar may be that figure, and the wedding a picture of two sides of you meeting at last.[2] It's the reading behind the all-logic dreamer who marries someone wild and emotional. The ring points the same way. Jung found the Self, his word for wholeness, in circles and mandalas, and a ring is a circle you wear, so a ring in your dream could be about becoming whole as much as about a partner. That's us applying his ideas, since he didn't write about wedding rings.

Freud: whose wish the wedding is

For Freud a dream's images come partly from the previous day,[3] and a wedding has plenty to lend: an invitation, a seating plan, a question from your mother. Then comes the wish. In his view a dream shows a wish fulfilled, in disguise, so applied to a wedding his question is whose wish it is, yours or the one your family holds for you. Even the disaster wedding (the wrong dress, the groom who doesn't turn up) would get the same question, because his framework treats a painful dream as a wish in disguise too, and here the wish could be to be rescued from the pressure.

Other readings

Artemidorus, a Greek writer whose 2nd-century AD dream book is the fullest to reach us from the ancient world, read a wedding as good for anyone starting something new or hoping to gain, since the bride brings a dowry, and as plain commotion for everyone else. He also noted that marriage and death resemble each other.[4] Calvin Hall, a psychologist from the United States, held that dreams picture how we see ourselves, and he gave a modern case: a young wife who dreamed that her wedding gown was dirty and torn. Together with her other dreams (her husband not turning up, the diamond missing from her engagement ring), Hall read it as her view of her marriage as an unhappy one.[5]

The biblical and spiritual meaning of a wedding in dreams

Weddings come up in scripture as pictures of a promise kept or a chance missed.

Weddings in the Bible

The Bible's first miracle story happens at a wedding in Cana, where Jesus turns water into wine when the wine runs out.[6] And in the parable of the ten virgins, five are shut out of the wedding because they weren't ready when the bridegroom came.[7] It's a close match for the dream where you arrive late and find the doors closed.

A wedding in the Agni Purana

The Agni Purana, a Hindu compendium that gives a chapter to dreams, lists a dream of your own marriage among the bad ones, though it also counts death and a burning house as good, so its lists run against the obvious.[8]

Questions to ask about your wedding dream

A wedding dream is crowded with people and objects, but a few questions usually cut through to what it's about.

  • Whose wedding was it, and what was your role?
  • Who were you marrying, and how did you feel about them?
  • Did the day go well, or did something go wrong?
  • What have you recently committed to, in love or elsewhere?
  • Was the wedding something you chose, or something expected of you?

Oniri asks you questions along these lines before it reads a dream, so a wedding dream is read through your own commitments and not a list of omens.

Frequently asked questions

Does dreaming about a wedding mean death?

No. The idea comes from an old folk rule that dreams mean the opposite of what they show, so a wedding foretold a funeral and a funeral a wedding. Nobody has ever found it to hold. A wedding dream is about commitment and change in your own life, and it has no power to predict anyone's death.

Does dreaming about my wedding mean I'll get married soon?

Not by itself. A wedding dream can reflect a real wish to marry, or a relationship getting more serious, but it can't tell you what will happen. More often it's about a commitment of another kind, like a new job, a move or a decision you've just made.

What does it mean to dream about getting married when you're already married?

It's common, and usually about the marriage you have. Marrying your own partner again often reflects a renewed commitment or a good stretch together. Marrying someone else tends to point to a part of your life you've committed to outside the marriage, like work or a project, and only rarely to a real wish to leave.

Why do I dream about weddings when I'm single?

Because the wedding in a dream is rarely about marriage alone. It stands for promises and big transitions, which single people make all the time. If you do want a partner, the dream may carry that wish too, and it's worth noticing whether the wedding felt joyful or like an obligation.
