Most of us spend a good part of every week in a car, and for many people their first car was the first real taste of freedom. So it makes sense that the car is one of the most common things in dreams, and one of the easiest to read. Dreaming about a car is usually about how you're moving through your life, your direction, your drive and how much control you have over where you're going.
Who's driving and how the car behaves are what decide the reading. Cruising down an open road is a very different dream from pressing a brake that does nothing, and sitting in the back while someone else steers is different again. Your waking life adds the rest, whether that's a new job you're steering into, a relationship heading somewhere unclear, or just a long commute that has seeped into your nights.
The dream dictionary
Dreaming about a car is usually about how you're moving through your life: your direction, your drive and how much control you have over where you're going. Driving smoothly points to confidence, while a stolen car, a car you can't find, failing brakes or someone else at the wheel point to feeling that your independence or your direction has slipped out of your hands.

Cars give us independence, they reflect how we want to be seen, and they need someone at the wheel. Most car dreams lean on one of four readings.
How you're moving through life
The car is how you get from where you are to where you're going, so a car dream often comes down to progress. A smooth drive points to a sense that life is heading in the right direction. Going in circles, stuck in traffic or lost on a road you don't recognize points to feeling stalled, or not knowing where you're headed. If the dream was mostly about driving itself, the page on that has more.
Who's in control
"In the driving seat" means being in charge, and car dreams test that constantly. Were you driving? Was someone else? Did the car do what you wanted? Questions like these usually lead straight to a situation where control is at stake (a career decision, a family arrangement, a relationship where one person sets the pace).
Your image and your self
People choose cars partly for what they say about them, and in dreams a car can stand for your identity and how you come across. A shiny new car can point to confidence or a new self-image, an old wreck to feeling worn out or behind. And losing your car, or having it stolen, often touches something about who you are.
Independence
A car is freedom to go where you want, when you want, and dreams about losing it often come when that freedom feels threatened. Think of a new baby, a health problem, money that's tight or a partner who decides where you go.
Dreaming about a car crash
People search for car crash dreams more than any other car dream, which is why the car accident page covers them in depth. Most of them come from a collision you sense coming in waking life, a plan heading for trouble, a row about to break out or a pace you can't keep up. None of them predicts an accident. But crashing and walking away unhurt is common too, and it usually means you'll cope with the fallout better than you expect.
Dreaming about your car being stolen
A stolen car is about something taken from you, often your independence, your sense of direction or part of your identity. Ask what you've lost lately or feel is being taken, whether that's a role at work, credit for an idea or time that used to be yours. If you knew the thief, the dream may be pointing straight at them. If you didn't, the thing taking over might be a situation, like a new job that leaves you no life, more than a person.
Dreaming about not finding your car
Walking up and down a car park, sure you left the car right here, is one of the most frustrating car dreams. It usually points to having lost track of your goals or your sense of direction. It often comes when you've been so busy looking after others that you've lost sight of what you wanted. It's a close relative of dreams about being lost. If you found it in the end, you're probably closer to getting back on track than you feel.
Dreaming about someone else driving your car
Riding in your own car while someone else drives is about handing over control. If it was a parent, you may have slipped back into being looked after, or feel they still steer your choices (which parents, to be fair, rarely stop trying to do). A partner at the wheel points to following their plans, and a stranger to letting circumstances drive you. If you were calm, it may be trust, but if you kept reaching for the wheel, you want your say back.

Dreaming about your brakes not working
Pressing the brake and feeling nothing is one of the most frightening car dreams. It's about being unable to stop something, like a project that has taken on its own speed, a relationship moving too fast, a habit you can't control or a schedule that never lets up. Ask where you've been wanting to slow down and haven't been able to. A car that breaks down entirely is the opposite worry, the fear of running out of energy (or money) before you get where you're going.
Dreaming about driving into water
A car going off a bridge or down a boat ramp is a dream about losing your footing in one sudden moment. The solid road gives way to something you can't steer through. People often have it after a shock (a breakup out of nowhere, a diagnosis, a job lost overnight). The sealed car matters too. If you got the window open and swam up, the dream is about your instinct to save yourself. But if you sat there as the water rose, it can point to freezing in a crisis, a feeling close to drowning dreams.
Dreaming about a new car
A new car is about a new start, a new role or a new image of yourself, like a promotion, a move or a change in how you present yourself. How it felt to drive is the clue. If it handled beautifully, you're growing into the change. And if you couldn't work the controls, the new role may still feel unfamiliar, and that's normal at the start.
Dreaming about a car according to Jung and Freud
Neither reading below is one either man gave of cars. Each applies an idea of his to the wheel and the road.
Jung: the car as persona
The face you present to others is what Jung called the persona.[1] People choose cars partly for what they say about them, which makes a car about as close to a persona on wheels as modern life gets: the shiny new one is a persona you're proud of, the wreck one that has worn through, and the stolen one a role someone else has taken over. His idea of compensation adds a twist, since a person who keeps up an immaculate image all day may dream of a rusting car at night.
Freud: the car and the day before
Freud began with the dreamer's own associations and with the day before,[2] and few images trace back to the day as easily as a car. A new car fits his idea of wish fulfilment almost too easily: the car you want, parked outside for the length of a night. What the car made you think of (your father's, your first, the one you couldn't afford) matters more than the model.
Other readings
Among the hundreds of trance readings the American psychic Edgar Cayce gave on dreams, the car, like the house, is read as a picture of the dreamer's own body or self.[3] On that view a car running badly may be about how you're running, short on sleep, fuel or care, and a car in repair about recovery.
The spiritual meaning of a car in dreams
The nearest thing to a car in the old dream texts is the chariot.
The chariot and the road in the Upanishads
The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, an early one, says a dream holds no chariot, no team and no road until the dreamer makes them, being the one who acts.[4] It's an old way of saying that in a dream you built the vehicle and laid the road, whoever sits at the wheel.
Questions to ask about your car dream
We spend so much time in cars that they turn up in dreams for ordinary reasons too,[5] so start with your week. Then try these.
- Whose car was it, and who was driving?
- Was it going where you wanted, and how fast?
- Did anything fail: brakes, engine, steering, the road itself?
- Did you lose it, or did someone take it?
- Which part of your life feels like it's steering itself?
The first thing Oniri wants to know about a car dream is who had the wheel and where the road was going, and the reading builds from there.
Frequently asked questions
What do dreams about cars mean?
Mostly they're about control and direction in your life. The car is how you get where you're going, so who's driving, how it handles and where it's headed show how you feel about your path right now. A car you're proud of can also stand for your image or status.
What does it mean to dream about someone else driving your car?
Usually that someone else has more say over your life than you'd like, or that you've handed over a decision. It depends on who it was: a parent at the wheel can mean you've slipped back into being looked after, a partner can mean you're following their plans. If you felt relaxed as a passenger, you may simply trust them.
Does dreaming about a car accident mean I'll have one?
No. Car accident dreams are common and don't predict anything. They usually reflect a fear of a plan or a relationship going wrong, or of losing control. They're covered in detail on the car accident dream page.
What does a red or a white car mean in a dream?
Color adds a little. A red car often goes with energy, passion or anger, and a white one with a fresh start or a clean slate. But the color of your own car, or one you want, matters more than any general meaning, so start there.
