The Best Lucid Dreaming Apps in 2026

So you've just discovered lucid dreaming and want your first one? Or you've had a few already, and you want to deepen the practice?

Either way, you take your phone and search "lucid dreaming" on the App Store or Google Play Store. Suddenly, dozens of apps promise to get you there, with reality-check reminders, guided courses, smart alarms, sounds played into your sleep. Some of those features show up in every app; others are niche and unique.

Which of those apps work is much harder to tell. Lucid dreaming is a slow practice, weeks of small habits before anything happens, and when a lucid dream finally comes there's no way to know which habit earned it.

So we found out the hard way. We analyzed 1,533 store reviews across 29 apps, tested the 22 most promising, paid all of them, and kept the six that are worth your time in 2026.

TL;DR#

No app can certify that it will make you have a lucid dream tonight. What the good ones do is help you build habits, like dream journaling or reality checks, and give you guides and features to perform techniques when you fall asleep or during the night.

Our picks
Don't install
  • Costs the most, does the least
    Shape
$79.99 for guided audio and little else
  • Needs hardware
    LucidMe
Built around a $200 sleep mask, and it publishes your dreams by default
  • No induction technique reliably produces a lucid dream on demand. What worked in the largest study was reality testing combined with MILD and a brief wake-back-to-bed.
  • Most apps have reality checks reminders, some allow for more customization than others. Oniri has a nice twist on the feature with home-screen widgets.
  • Shape advertises $39.99 a year and asked for $79.99 at the checkout, twice the price on its own listing.
  • Awoken is the oldest app of all but has shipped nothing since July 2024, has no export, and its cloud backup did not work in our testing. The interface also feels outdated.
  • LucidMe is mainly built around a sleep mask, and publishes new entries publicly by default.
  • Most apps focused on lucid dreaming have very basic dream journaling features. You may want to combine a lucid dreaming app with a proper dream journaling app, or use Oniri that combines both.

What the research says about lucid dream induction#

Pooling 50 years of studies in 2016, researchers found that around 55% of people have had at least one lucid dream, and roughly a quarter have one or more a month.[1] Chances are that if you're here, you never had a lucid dream, or you just had a few accidental ones, and you want to make it happen more consistently. So, is it possible to make that happen?

The data is not very encouraging. Reviewing the induction literature in 2012, researchers found no technique that reliably produces lucid dreams on demand.[2] Then another team ran the biggest test anyone had attempted: reality testing alone did close to nothing, while reality testing plus MILD worked, and the strongest predictor was how quickly people fell back asleep after the rehearsal.[3] Their 2020 international study found the same shape: it is the stack of techniques that works, not any single one in it.[4]

Which leaves an app three jobs.

  1. Keep the daytime habit alive with reality checks.
  2. Guide the wake-back-to-bed and wake induced techniques (MILD, WILD, SSILD), the highest-leverage in the literature.
  3. Build the journal, because your dream signs are personal and you only find them by recording enough dreams for the pattern to surface.

We can't promise that any app below will make you lucid on a schedule. But they will make it much more likely to happen once. And then again, until it becomes consistent.

How we tested#

We first searched for lucid dreaming apps on both the App Store and the Google Play Store, and looked at which apps were mentioned online, in forums and discussions. We selected 29 apps and analyzed 1533 reviews from both stores, to see what people like, dislike, and complain about. A selection is quoted in the listings below, with the good and the bad summed up for each app.

We then installed, purchased, and tested the 22 most promising apps in the lot. That's where we find out, for instance, when one app advertises $39.99 a year and asks for $79.99 when you actually try to buy it. Then we tried and used all features, from the essentials to each app's unusual trick.

In the end, we selected the 6 apps below, based on overall experience, price, features, and availability. For those we outline what users say, what worked in our tests and what didn't, all features, price, pros and cons, and our verdict.

Features#

  • Complete dream journaling interface
  • Tag dream signs, emotions, characters, places, and more
  • Reality-check reminders and home-screen widgets
  • Guided MILD, WBTB, WILD, SSILD, each with its own flow
  • Soundscapes and binaural audio that can run through the night
  • Dream goals, to set an intention before sleep

Pros#

  • The best dream journaling experience
  • The only app to offer reality-check widgets
  • Wide panel of techniques and audio tracks to guide lucidity
  • Also offers voice transcription, dream interpretation, and image generation

Cons#

  • Android was lagging behind, but now it seems resolved
  • No tracking of when you performed reality checks
  • No dream wall to share your dreams with others

Our verdict#

Oniri is built with a dream journal at the core, and you can feel it. The journal is amazing, covering everything you need, from voice transcription to tagging dream signs and emotions, and generating images for your dreams. The panel of lucid dreaming techniques is one of the biggest of lucid dreaming apps. Reality checks come with scheduled reminders and home-screen widgets, which matters more than it sounds, because notifications quietly failing is one of the most common complaints across this category and a widget doesn't depend on them. Wake Back to Bed, MILD, WILD and SSILD each have their own guided flow, with audio cues and binaural tracks that can run through the night.

Reality checks and the journal are free; other techniques are part of the premium version. The Android app was genuinely bad for years and drew reviews to match, then was rebuilt from scratch in mid-2026 to iOS parity. Oniri also has a whole panel dedicated to dream patterns and interpretation, if you're interested into that too.

Oniri FAQ#

Which lucid dreaming techniques does Oniri include?

Reality checks with reminders and home-screen widgets, Wake Back to Bed, MILD, WILD and SSILD, plus audio cues, guided soundtracks and binaural tracks for the night. The reality checks are free; the guided techniques and audio are part of Premium.

Do Oniri's reality-check reminders actually fire?

Yes, they fired reliably throughout our testing, and the home-screen widget is a second nudge that does not depend on notifications at all. That is worth checking in any app you try: reminders silently failing is one of the most common complaints across this whole category.

Can Oniri wake you up for a wake back to bed?

Not on its own. You get a guided WBTB flow and audio that can run through it, but the alarm is one you set yourself, at whatever hour you decide. No app on either platform reads your sleep well enough to pick that hour for you without extra hardware, so five hours after lights out is as good a starting point as anything.

Is Oniri free if you only want to lucid dream?

Half of it is. Reality-check reminders, the widgets and the whole journal cost nothing, and those are the two habits that actually make people lucid. The guided MILD, WBTB, WILD and SSILD flows, the audio and the statistics are Premium at $12.99 a month or $59.99 a year. If reminders are all you want, Awoken further down does that for free.

Features#

  • Seven-day course, a lesson each morning and evening
  • Guided practice timers for SSILD, WBTB, MILD and WILD
  • Reality-check reminders
  • Dream journal tracking emotions, people

Pros#

  • A course that teaches the techniques in order
  • The journal is free and quite developed

Cons#

  • The induction timers unlock several days into the course
  • No audio cueing at all, so the night is an alarm and nothing more

Our verdict#

Lucidity teaches. Its seven-day course gives you a morning lesson and an evening one; the practice screens are the standout. Where most apps explain SSILD in a paragraph, Lucidity has a timed dial that runs the visual, tactile and auditory phases and counts you through them, with equivalents for WBTB, MILD and WILD. They unlock several days into the course, so a week of using the app its way is the price of trying the thing you downloaded it for.

The journal underneath is stronger than a teaching app needs, and it is the part that outlives the course: emotions, people, places, objects and themes, an emotion graph across them, markers for the odd specifics like sleep paralysis or the colour of a dream. Finish the seven days and you are holding the raw material for your own dream signs rather than a certificate. Check the publisher before you download, too, since an unrelated iOS app is also called Lucidity.

Lucidity FAQ#

Does the Lucidity 7-day course work?

Reviewers report first lucid dreams within about ten days of starting it, which is roughly what the research would predict from daily practice combined with journaling. The course itself is a morning and evening lesson each day, and the guided SSILD timer is the best implementation of that technique we found in any app.

Is Lucidity free?

Journaling, emotion tracking and the graphs are free and unlimited. The AI analysis, auto-tagging and the lucid dreaming assistant need Pro, at $12.99 a month or $49.99 a year with a 7-day trial.

When do Lucidity's practice timers unlock?

Several days into the seven-day course, which is the app's one real design annoyance. The SSILD dial is the best implementation of that technique we found anywhere, and you can't reach it on the night you install the app. Consider the first week the price of admission, and use the journal meanwhile.

Does Lucidity play audio cues during the night?

No, and it's the biggest gap in an otherwise complete trainer. Lucidity covers the daytime habit and the technique lessons well, but once you're asleep it has nothing to offer beyond an alarm you set. For overnight cueing you're looking at Awoken, which does it for free, or Oniri's audio tracks.

  • Peak dreamtime: a wake-back-to-bed window computed from Apple Health

Pros#

  • Good audio course
  • Dreamsigns captured as whole sentences, the way the literature defines them
  • Tries to send WBTB alarm at the right time during sleep (although the accuracy is unknown)

Cons#

  • Advertised at $39.99 a year and charged $79.99 at the checkout
  • Peak dreamtime needs an Apple Watch to produce anything
  • The journal holds the dream, the date and a lucid flag, and nothing else
  • iPhone only

Our verdict#

Shape's thirty-day course is a genuinely well-made set of guided sessions, calmly voiced and paced. Everything outside the audio is thin. Peak dreamtime, the cleverest idea in the category, reads your sleep data and offers a wake-back-to-bed alarm just before your usual REM window, and in practice it needs an Apple Watch: iPhone-only tracking never produced a window for us. The journal records the dream, the date and whether it was lucid, so there is no way to find a pattern in it. Then there is the price, advertised at $39.99 a year and charged at $79.99, which reviewers have been complaining about for a year. There is no Android version at all.

Shape FAQ#

How much does Shape actually cost?

Its listing advertises $39.99 a year. At checkout we were asked for $79.99 a year, or $19.99 a month, after a 7-day trial, which matches what reviewers report being billed. That makes it the most expensive app in this category by a wide margin.

What is peak dreamtime in Shape?

Shape reads your sleep data, builds a histogram of when you most often reach REM, and suggests a wake-back-to-bed alarm just before your usual dream window. It is a genuinely clever idea, but in our testing it needs an Apple Watch to produce anything: iPhone-only sleep tracking was not enough.

Is Shape available on Android?

No, iPhone and iPad only, and it wants a fairly recent iOS. There is no Android version and nothing in the listing suggests one is coming, so Android users looking for a guided audio course are better served by Lucidity's lessons.

Is Shape's free tier usable?

More than the listing admits. The journal, the dreamsigns, the reminders and the progress tracking all work without paying, and one reviewer logged 780 dreams without ever subscribing, even though the store page implies unlimited entries are a premium feature. What the subscription actually buys is the audio course, which is the good part, at a price we can't recommend.

Cons#

  • No export, and the cloud backup did not work for us
  • Ads run inside the writing screen
  • Android only, and nothing shipped since July 2024

Our verdict#

Awoken is one of the oldest app here. It is free, it is small, and it does one thing extremely well. Reminders fire through the day with a totem sound you learn to associate with checking reality, and overnight Dream Clues play audio into your sleep, which is real cueing rather than a marketing word. Free means ad supported, though, and the banners run inside the entry screen while you write: one reviewer says the distraction made him lose the dream twice, which for a dream journal is the worst place an ad could be.

Now the catch, and it is a big one. Its Dream Cloud backup did not work in our testing, matching a year of reviews all quoting the same error. The app has not been updated since July 2024, there is no export, and the store screenshots still advertise a Google+ community, a network that shut down in 2019. Buying premium to remove ads reportedly cannot be restored on a new install. Overall, a valid budget option, but you get what you pay for.

Awoken FAQ#

Is Awoken still worth downloading in 2026?

As a free reality-check tool with overnight audio cues, yes, and it has been doing that job well for over a decade. As a place to keep your dreams, no: the cloud backup did not work in our testing, so your journal lives on that one phone with no export and no way off it.

Is Awoken available on iPhone?

No. Awoken has always been Android only, and there is no iOS version. Older articles that list it as a cross-platform pick are wrong.

What happened to Awoken's Dream Cloud backup?

It stopped answering. Every attempt to log in or restore returns "Could not reach the server at the present moment", which is the same error reviewers have been quoting since mid-2025, and it failed for us too. Several people describe losing years of entries on a phone change; one only got his back because he still had the old handset.

Do Awoken's reality-check reminders still work on a modern phone?

For most people, with a caveat worth knowing before you rely on them. A steady stream of 2025 and 2026 reviewers report alerts resetting to silent, clues not firing overnight, and custom sounds refusing to be set, which is what you'd expect from an app last updated in July 2024 meeting Android's tightening background rules. Set them, then check in a fortnight that they're still arriving.

What does Awoken's premium purchase unlock?

One small payment removes the ads and adds the dark theme and the Dream Patterns word counts. Three separate reviewers report that it can't be restored on a new install: the app answers "You already own this item" while the ads keep running, and there's no restore-purchases button to fall back on.

Cons#

  • No guided practice, no wake-back-to-bed alarm and no audio
  • Tags and notes rather than structured symbols, so dream signs never surface
  • Voice transcription failed on every attempt in our testing

Our verdict#

The name undersells it. Behind the journal is a Lucid Center with lessons on reality testing, MILD, WBTB, SSILD and FILD, and randomised reality-check alarms that you can log when you do them. Take that logging seriously, because it is the one thing here that turns a technique into data. Reality checks are the classic case of a habit everyone believes they are keeping: set the alarms, log each one as you do it, and after a week you have a count rather than an impression, usually a smaller count than you expected.

One $2.99 purchase covers the AI interpretation and unlimited voice input and export. What it doesn't have is any sleep-timed alarm or audio cueing, so the middle-of-the-night part is on you. The journal is medium depth, tags and notes rather than structured symbols. And the voice transcription failed on every attempt in our testing. Another simple, cheap option, but it's hard to sell that it can compete with the top apps in this category.

They've added an interpretation feature. I thought at first that it will be generic, cookie cutter stuff but I was wrong! It's surprisingly deep and personal.

App shares your dreams to other users automatically. Doesn’t let you change your user name without premium subscription. App should advise you to choose a user name that doesn’t disclose your identity.

Thanks for sharing your feedback. Each dream has a toggle where you can choose to keep it private or make it public. You’re always in control of what gets shared. If you have dreams appearing on the dream wall which you intended to keep private, you can edit the dream and turn off the public toggle.…

Used to love this app until I got locked out of it a while ago due to password/email issues. Contacted support many times over the past few years for their assistance but they never respond.

I've had about 60 dreams recorded over the years that I can't access. The lack of transparency on these things is criminal. I'm using another app next time.

Dream Journal Ultimate FAQ#

Can you learn lucid dreaming in Dream Journal Ultimate?

Better than the name suggests. It has a Lucid Center with lessons on reality testing, MILD, WBTB, SSILD and FILD, and randomised reality-check alarms you can log, so you can see how many you actually did. What it lacks is any sleep-timed alarm or audio cueing, so it teaches the technique and leaves the execution to you.

How do the reality-check alarms in Dream Journal Ultimate work?

You choose how many you want and they fire at random times through the day, and each one can be logged once you've done the check. That logging is the useful part: after a week you have a count of how many you actually performed rather than an impression, and it is usually lower than you'd guess.

Does Dream Journal Ultimate play anything while you sleep?

No. There's no audio cueing, no sleep-timed alarm and no wake-back-to-bed flow, so everything it does happens while you're awake. It teaches five techniques and leaves the 3am execution entirely to you.

Features#

  • A technique library with video lessons and tests
  • Sleep tracker with a real hypnogram and a REM-timed alarm
  • An optional smart sleep mask, sold separately

Pros#

  • A real hypnogram and a REM-timed alarm
  • The technique library, unlike anything else on offer

Cons#

  • New entries publish publicly by default
  • No reality-check reminders and no technique tools, only written instructions
  • $69 a year, plus a $200 mask for the sleep tracking

Our verdict#

LucidMe belongs to Michael Raduga's REMspace, and its real content is his technique library: video lessons, tests, and his own taxonomy of direct and indirect methods rather than the usual MILD and WILD vocabulary. His followers are devoted, several reviews read as fan mail, and the results people report are not nothing. The sleep tracking is the most ambitious thing in the category, a real hypnogram plus an alarm aimed at the end of a REM period rather than a fixed hour, and it leans on a smart sleep mask sold separately for around $200. Reviewers who bought one report that it barely works, which makes it a lot of money for a problem a phone alarm at five hours mostly solves.

It is also the app we would trust least with your dreams. New entries publish publicly by default: "this is not a journal, it's some kind of dream social network," as one reviewer put it. Some entry types apparently cannot be kept private at all. There are no reality-check reminders and no technique tools, only written instructions, and the interpretation is basic. Its 3.6 Play average comes from a polarised histogram, a devoted core and a long tail of people whose app would not launch. Read Raduga's material if it interests you. Keep your dreams somewhere else.

What users like
  • Michael Raduga's technique library with video lessons and tests
  • Real hypnogram sleep tracker with a REM-timed alarm
  • Keywords, duration, vividness and generated images per entry
  • Active practitioner forums sharing experiences
  • The only dream app with its own hardware
What users dislike
  • New entries are public by default, more feed than diary
  • No reality-check reminders and no technique tools
  • Interpretation is basic
  • Registration demands both an email and a phone number
  • Mask buyers report the hardware barely works
★★★★★

Although quite basic to look at it gives a wealth of very useful information for beginners and regular 'Phasers' alike. Mr Raduga is just giving away the results of years of research here, for free.

The instructions work. I couldn't believe it. I do not care for the term astral projection as it implies the need for spirituality.

This got me out of body on my first attempt. You have to experiment with it to make sure you have your headset positioned so it can detect your loud breaths

wilisaoh · App Store · Apr 2021

the mask itself doesn't work properly. The first night, within a few minutes, it started saying, "You're dreaming, wake up. you're dreaming. wake up. " I wasn't asleep. The app freezes. you have to constantly uninstall and reinstall.

Dillon Whitt · Google Play · Oct 2025

The mask doesn't work without the app. And the app doesn't work at all unless you register with an email and phone number.

E Phone · Google Play · Oct 2025

Total waste of money. The mask itself is very comfortable, but the technology in the mask turns on less than half of the time. It is a great idea, but they need to fix the issues.

LucidMe FAQ#

Are dreams private in LucidMe?

Treat it as a social network rather than a diary. New entries publish publicly by default, several reviewers say some entry types cannot be kept private at all, and one found that share links were numbered sequentially on the website. Registration also requires both an email address and a phone number.

Does the LucidMe sleep mask work?

Buyers say it mostly doesn't. One reports the technology switching on less than half the time, another was told "You're dreaming, wake up" within minutes of putting it on, wide awake, and it's useless without registering in the app first. For around $200 that's a lot of money aimed at a problem a phone alarm at five hours mostly solves.

Does LucidMe have reality-check reminders?

No. For an app in this category that's a striking omission: there are no reminders and no guided technique tools at all, only Raduga's written and video instructions to follow on your own. The sleep tracking is the ambitious part, and it needs the mask.

Do you need an account to use LucidMe?

Yes, and it asks for a phone number as well as an email address. Several reviewers never received the confirmation code and couldn't get in at all, one was locked out of an existing account, and the entries you do write publish publicly by default. It's the least private setup in this roundup.

Which lucid dreaming features actually help#

Sometimes the apps all look the same at first glance. But here are four things to help you decide which app you should trust to get you lucid.

1. Reality check reminders that make you build a habit#

Reality testing works mostly in combination with other techniques, but it's one of the most important things to do, along with dream journaling. Apps can help you build this important habit with reminders, with more or less settings and control. Oniri also lets you use widgets to take this further. Dream Journal Ultimate lets you log when you did your reminders, to track your progress.

2. Getting sounds during the night#

A brief wake-back-to-bed is the highest-leverage thing in the research, and almost nothing automates it well. Shape's peak dreamtime is adressed at this, but it needs an Apple Watch, and its accuracy remains to be proven. LucidMe's REM alarm needs its expensive mask to work. Oniri and Lucidity give you a WBTB flow with an alarm you set yourself, simpler but working on any phone. A plain alarm at five hours gets you most of the way; what an app adds is something to do when you wake up.

3. The journal is the technique#

The part beginners skip and experienced lucid dreamers never do. Your dream signs are personal, and the only way to find them is to record enough dreams for the patterns to show. That is why the apps ranked highest here have the deepest journals, and why a text box with a lucid checkbox will stall you after a month. If you are not yet remembering several dreams a week, start there before buying anything.

4. Audio is a nice extra#

Guided tracks, soundscapes and binaural beats are a nice addition in these apps. Audio tracks to help you fall asleep, wake you up gently, or guide your dreams, make the experience more enjoyable.

What about the other apps?#

There are so many lucid dreaming apps out there, the list could go on and on. A couple popular apps have been abandoned, here they are. While you may still be able to download and use them, we wouldn't recommend doing so, as the servers may be stopped at any point, and any bugs you face might not get resolved, ever.

DreamWell app icon

DreamWell has complete lucid dreaming courses, seven-day programmes with short lessons, and meditations and sleep sounds. But it stopped. Both apps received their final update on 26 November 2024, review replies ended in early 2024. If you find it in a list of recommendations, that list is old.

WorldWithin app icon
WorldWithin
Since 2021 · The Dream Company UG
iOS: Abandoned Jul 2022No Android app

WorldWithin is the closest thing in this category to Awoken with a nicer face: reality-check reminders, a journal, eight guides to work through, a streak counter, a Discord alongside. But the last version shipped on 8 July 2022. The $79.99 yearly membership is still printed in the listing, though, and the terms and privacy links beside it point at worldwithin.app, which no longer resolves to anything. Just like DreamWell, the app is dead. You may still be able to use some of the features, but any data you log in there might be lost forever.

YoruX app icon
YoruX
Since 2021 · YoruX UAB
iOS: Abandoned Dec 2023No Android app

YoruX went after all three jobs at once: reality checks and wake-up alarms, a journal you can keep private or post to a shared wall, Apple Watch sleep tracking around both. It is still on the App Store, still asking $29.99 a year, and it has not been updated since 20 December 2023. The domain was sold on and now redirects to an online gambling page.

Which lucid dreaming app should you use?#

If you want the whole practice in one place and the most complete dream journal, that's Oniri. If you want a cheap option that will get you halfway there, we recommend Dream Journal Ultimate.

We would not recommend Shape, as it's the most expensive option out there and is missing many important features. And LucidMe is built around a $200 sleep mask, and is pretty empty without it, so unless you want to buy it, stay away from it.

Whichever app you choose, what matters is your practice. What makes people lucid is remembering their dreams, noticing what repeats in them, and waking up briefly at the right hour. Whether you're consistent and motivated will determine if you get lucid or not.

All the apps were given the same care during testing, including Oniri, which we develop ourselves. We applied the same testing methods, and analyzed the reviews from users the same way as other apps. All links are unaffiliated. No app paid to be featured on this list. Prices, ratings and versions were checked in August 2026.

Pertanyaan yang sering diajukan

What is the best lucid dreaming app?

For a complete toolkit on both platforms, Oniri, which is ours. For a structured course with guided technique timers, Lucidity. For audio guides, Shape, if you are on iPhone and the $79.99 a year does not put you off. For a free reality-check trainer, Awoken. None of them will make you lucid on their own: the app is scaffolding around a practice.

Do lucid dreaming apps actually work?

Indirectly. A systematic review of induction methods concluded that no technique reliably produces lucid dreams on demand, and the largest induction study found reality testing did little by itself. What did work was the combination: reality testing plus MILD plus a brief wake-back-to-bed. An app helps by making that combination a habit and by building the dream journal that gives you your dream signs.

How long before an app gives me a lucid dream?

Reviewers of these apps report first lucid dreams anywhere from three days to a couple of months, and a meta-analysis of 50 years of research found 55% of people have had at least one lucid dream already, so many people are starting closer than they think. Recall comes first: until you remember several dreams a week, there is nothing for the techniques to work on.

Do binaural beats help you lucid dream?

The evidence is thin. A meta-analysis of binaural beats found effects on anxiety and cognition that were small and inconsistent, and there is no good evidence of an effect on lucidity specifically. If a track helps you relax back to sleep after a wake-back-to-bed, that is a real benefit. Just do not pay for an app on that basis alone.

Which lucid dreaming apps are abandoned?

More than you would guess from search results. DreamWell has shipped nothing since November 2024 while still selling a $69.99 annual subscription. Awoken's last update was July 2024 and its backup server has been unreachable since at least mid-2025. Check the last-updated date on the store listing before you trust an app with years of dreams.
