Dream About Teeth Falling Out: What It Means

Pontos principais

  • A dream about teeth falling out is less common than its reputation: 18.8% of 1,181 Canadian university students said they had ever had one, which put it 38th of 55 typical dream themes.
  • The only study to test the dental explanation, 210 university students in Israel in 2018, linked teeth dreams to tension in the teeth, gums or jaw on waking and found no link with psychological distress.
  • Dreams of teeth falling out don't predict death, money or any other event. Those readings come from ancient dream books and folk belief, not from evidence.
  • Someone who keeps dreaming of teeth falling out and wakes up with a sore jaw may be grinding or clenching at night, which a dentist can check for and treat with a night guard.

Teeth falling out is one of the dreams people look up most, and almost everyone has heard of it, including plenty of people who have never had it. Every dream site has a meaning ready (stress, loss, money worries, even a death in the family), and most of them sound very sure of it. But a dream about teeth falling out is rarer than its reputation, and the best evidence on why it happens points less to your worries than to your jaw. Here's what the dream can mean, how common it really is and when it's worth mentioning to a dentist.

Why do I dream about my teeth falling out?#

The likeliest reason you dream about your teeth falling out is that your teeth, gums or jaw were tense or sore while you slept. Your dreaming brain simply turned that feeling into a story. In a study of university students, the ones who had teeth dreams more often were also the ones who woke up with tension in their teeth, gums or jaw. None of the other dreams on the list (falling, being smothered, searching for a toilet) went with a tense jaw.[1]

The odd part is that teeth dreams had nothing to do with knowing you grind your teeth, only with feeling it in the morning. That makes sense, because plenty of people grind at night without any idea that they do. Nobody shares their bed to hear it, and the habit only shows up as worn teeth or a broken filling. We also know our brains do this while we sleep, since researchers have shown in the lab that a sensation on the body during dreaming sleep can find its way into the dream.

The psychologist who led the work, Nirit Soffer-Dudek, puts it carefully. In her words, these dreams, "especially if coupled with a sense of jaw discomfort in the morning, may reflect the presence of teeth grinding in one's sleep."[2] It's one small study, though. She's the first to say that jaw discomfort explains only part of why people have them.

How common are teeth falling out dreams?#

Teeth falling out dreams are less common than the way people talk about them suggests. In one large survey, 18.8% of 1,181 Canadian university students said they had ever dreamed that their teeth were falling out. That put the dream 38th of the 55 typical themes on the list.[3] Being chased and falling were far ahead, and so was the dream of arriving somewhere too late.

The most common dreams

  • Being chased: 82%
  • Falling: 74%
  • School, teachers or studying: 67%
  • Arriving too late: 60%
  • Flying: 48%
  • Being naked: 33%
  • Teeth falling out: 19%

Surveys don't agree on the exact figure for teeth dreams, and another one found that 39% of people had had a teeth dream at least once, 16.2% said it kept coming back and 8.2% had it regularly. But both numbers come from asking people what they remember having dreamed, and real dream records give a much smaller one. When 126 students wrote down every dream they remembered for two weeks, only one of their 983 dreams was about losing teeth.[4] In a sleep lab, where people were woken during dreaming sleep and asked what they had just seen, teeth came up in 3 dreams out of 635.

So why does it feel like everyone has this dream? And why do so many people swear they've had it? A teeth dream is short, vivid and physical, the kind you wake up from and check with your tongue, so it stays with you while we forget hundreds of ordinary dreams about work and family. It's also a dream people tell each other about, and it has made it into films, with Disney's Inside Out using it as a picture of stress. Dreams of being naked in public are famous in the same way, although two people in three have never had one.

What does a dream about teeth falling out mean?#

Search for it and you'll find the same list on almost every site (stress, a loss, shame about how you look, losing control, getting older). Most of these meanings have never been tested. The one that has, stress, didn't hold up. In the same study that found the jaw link, teeth dreams had no connection with how stressed, anxious or low the students felt, while dreams of falling and of being smothered did. That result surprised the researchers themselves.

I thought we would find a stronger correlation between dreams of teeth falling out and psychological distress.

Nirit Soffer-Dudek[2] Psychologist, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev

Stress may still be part of the story, by way of your jaw. Stress and anxiety are the most common cause of teeth grinding.[5] In the student study, people under more strain did report a little more tension in their teeth, though the link was weak. An older study from 1984 had linked teeth dreams with anxiety and depression, but the 2018 one didn't find that again.

The idea that the body is behind these dreams isn't new. When Freud wrote about teeth dreams in 1900, the "dental irritation" theory was already going around, and he thought it was probably true but far from enough.[6] His own reading was sexual (he took it for a disguised dream about masturbation), and he also noted that popular belief read the dream as the death of a close friend. In a footnote he passes on Carl Jung's view that in women, these dreams stand for giving birth.

Worries about your body can come out this way too. In nearly 3,000 dream reports collected during the Covid-19 pandemic, fears about health often turned into images that had nothing to do with the virus. Some made no physical sense at all, like a body crumbling into sand, and teeth falling out was one of them.[7]

So a teeth dream can carry a meaning, but it's yours, and no dictionary can hand it to you. Start with how the dream felt (embarrassed, panicked, oddly calm) and what in your week felt the same, which is how dream interpretation works best. Jung's way of working with a dream's images is another way in. And if you'd like help, Oniri's dream meaning app and its AI dream interpreter ask about what's going on in your life before they suggest anything.

Teeth crumbling, breaking or rotting: does the version matter?#

Some people dream that their teeth crumble like chalk, others that they snap, rot or come out one by one into their hand. Nobody has studied these versions separately (the student study grouped falling out and rotting together), so any site that gives each one a fixed meaning is guessing. Freud even read the dream where someone else pulls your tooth out as the same dream in another form.

Whatever the version, the first thing to ask yourself is how your jaw felt when you woke up. After that, the questions below are a better start than a dictionary entry, because the answer comes from your life and not from the symbol.

What happens in the dreamA question worth asking yourself
Your teeth fall out one by oneWhat's slipping away a little more each week?
All your teeth fall out at onceDid something change suddenly, or are you afraid it will?
Your teeth crumble or turn to dustWhat feels like it's wearing down, your health, your patience or a plan?
A tooth breaks or cracksDid something give way under pressure this week?
Your teeth rot or go looseIs there something you've been putting off fixing?
You pull them out yourselfAre you ending something on purpose, even though it hurts?
Someone else pulls them outWho has more say over your life right now than you'd like?
You try to put them back inWhat are you trying to hold together, or to undo?

If none of the questions rings a bell, that's an answer as well, because the dream may simply have come from your jaw.

Teeth grinding, clenching and the morning jaw#

Grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep (sleep bruxism, if you want a term to search for) is common. About one adult in eight says they do it often,[8] and the real number is probably higher because so many people never find out. The signs are a painful jaw, headaches or earache, and teeth that are worn, broken or more sensitive than they used to be. Or a partner who hears you grinding at night.

If you keep having teeth dreams and you recognise one of these signs, mention both to your dentist. A dentist can check your teeth for wear and, if you need one, make a mouth guard that you wear at night so the grinding doesn't damage them.

Woke up from a teeth dream with a sore jaw? Tell your dentist, because it can be the first sign that you grind your teeth at night.

The rest is the advice that helps with grinding in general. Find a way to relax in the evening, go to bed at the same time every night, and cut down on alcohol and caffeine (and cigarettes, if you smoke). These habits never hurt, and if your teeth dreams do come from your jaw, they're the part you can change tonight.

Why do I keep dreaming about my teeth falling out?#

A recurring teeth dream is less unusual than it feels, since in one survey 16.2% of people said theirs kept coming back and 8.2% had it regularly. Look for a pattern before you look for a meaning. For two weeks, write each dream down as soon as you wake up, and add one line on how your jaw and teeth feel. A dream journal app makes that quick to do while you're still half asleep, and the guide to keeping a good dream journal covers the rest.

If the teeth dreams line up with sore mornings, you'll have something concrete to show your dentist. If they line up with hard weeks at work or at home, that's worth knowing too, and the questions in the table above are a good place to start.

A dream about teeth falling out says more about your jaw than about your future: it predicts nothing.

And if the dream wakes you up frightened night after night, treat it like any other recurring nightmare. The guide to having fewer nightmares covers the method sleep doctors recommend, which has you rewrite the dream's ending while you're awake.

Nobody has the whole answer to why we dream about our teeth falling out. Even the researcher behind the jaw finding says that jaw and teeth discomfort explain only a bit of it, and that much is left to explain. The rest (the version you had, the feeling it left you with, the week it came in) is yours to read. There's no evidence that a dream can tell you who's going to die or what you'll pay next month, whatever you've read about prophetic dreams. But a dream about teeth falling out may be telling you to unclench your jaw.

Perguntas frequentes

Does dreaming of teeth falling out mean death?

No. Dreaming of teeth falling out doesn't mean that you or someone close to you is going to die, and there's no evidence that dreams predict deaths. The belief is old, though. Freud noted in 1900 that popular belief read the dream as the death of a close friend, and the ancient Greek dream book of Artemidorus tied each tooth to a member of the household. The likeliest cause is far more ordinary: a tense or sore jaw during sleep.

What is the biblical meaning of teeth falling out in a dream?

The Bible doesn't give one, because none of the dreams it tells involves teeth. Teeth do appear in its poetry, for instance in Psalm 3, where God breaks 'the teeth of the ungodly', and in Lamentations, where the speaker's teeth are broken 'with gravel stones'. The biblical meanings you find online are modern readings built on verses like these, not an interpretation the Bible itself gives to this dream.

Does losing teeth in a dream mean money?

Not in any way research supports, but the idea is very old. Artemidorus, a Greek who wrote a dream book in the second century, read teeth falling out as paying off your debts if you owed money. For a sick person he read it as a long illness, and for a merchant as selling stock quickly. A teeth dream says something about your night, and possibly your jaw, but nothing about your finances.

Is it good luck to dream about teeth falling out?

It's neither good nor bad luck, since dreams don't predict what happens to you. Some old dream books did read it as good news for some dreamers: Artemidorus thought it meant freedom for a slave and a quick sale for a merchant. Most people find the dream unsettling. If yours left you calm or even relieved, that feeling is worth noticing, because it may say something about a change you want in your life.

What does it mean to dream about teeth falling out in Islam?

The Quran and the hadith collections of Bukhari and Muslim don't mention dreams of teeth falling out. The Islamic meanings you find online come from dream books sold under the name of Ibn Sirin, an eighth-century scholar from Basra, which historians think later writers compiled under his name. The hadith do describe three kinds of dream, and one of them is the dream that comes from your own thoughts and worries.
