Dreaming about doors usually comes down to a chance, a change or a barrier, because every door is a choice between staying where you are and stepping into somewhere else. An open door tends to mean an opportunity, a closed or locked one something standing in your way, and a door that won't shut a feeling that you can't keep the outside world out.
To read your own dream, look at the door's state and your place in front of it. Were you trying to get in or keep something out? Was it your own front door, a door at work or a door you'd never seen? And what was on the other side, if you got that far?
The dream dictionary
Dreaming about doors usually points to a new chance, a change you're about to walk into, or something blocking your way. An open door tends to mean opportunity, a locked one a barrier or a part of yourself you've closed off. A door that won't shut is about feeling unsafe, and a knock about something or someone you can't keep out much longer.

Doors decide who gets in, which is why the same door can feel like a welcome or a threat depending on which side you're on.
A chance, or a change ahead
Walking through a door is about entering a new stage: a job, a home, a relationship, a different way of living. If you went through calmly, you may be readier than you feel. If you stood in the doorway without moving, you're probably still deciding.
A barrier
A closed door is the plainest picture of something you can't reach yet. The question is why it's shut. A locked door you have no keys for points to an obstacle that isn't yours to remove, while one that's simply closed may only need a push you haven't given it.
Your boundaries
Doors are also how you protect your privacy. A dream about your own front door is often about who you let into your life, and how easily. If people walked in without knocking, look at where your boundaries are being ignored.
Dreaming about knocking on a door
Knocking on someone's door is about asking for something: help, a chance, forgiveness, to be let back in. If it opened, you may be more welcome than you fear. If nobody answered, the dream may be about a request you're afraid to make, or one already turned down. When the knock is on your door, something or someone wants your attention, and whether you opened it says how ready you are.
Dreaming of open doors
An open door is one of the most hopeful versions. It points to opportunity, a way forward that's already there for you to take. A door swinging open on its own can also be about change arriving without your asking. If you didn't walk through, ask what's holding you back.
Dreaming about a locked door
A locked door you can't open is about frustration, or something kept from you. It can be an opportunity, a person who has shut you out, or a part of your own past you've closed off. If you were on the inside of the locked door, the dream turns toward being trapped, a situation you can't leave.
Dreaming about a door that won't close
A door that won't shut or lock is one of the most common anxiety dreams about home. It's about feeling unsafe or exposed, unable to keep out a person, a worry or the demands of other people. It tends to come when your boundaries are under strain, at work, in a family or in a relationship.

Dreaming about a door to a room you didn't know
Finding a door in your own home that you'd never noticed, with a room behind it, is a famous kind of dream. Jung described his own 1909 dream of a house whose lower floors led further and further back in time, and he came to read the house as a picture of the mind.[1] Read that way, a hidden door in your house is a part of yourself you haven't explored yet, an interest, a memory or a strength. People often have this dream at the start of a big change, and the new room is usually a good sign.
Doors in everyday phrases
Dreams pun on the phrases we use awake, and doors have plenty: a foot in the door, a door slammed in your face, shown the door, behind closed doors, and when one door closes, another opens. Which one fits your week?
Dreaming about doors according to Jung and Freud
Jung: the knock in the night
Jung's shadow, everything in yourself you've turned away from, often arrives in dreams as a stranger or an intruder.[4] A knock at your door in the middle of the night, from a visitor you're too frightened to let in, would then be that part asking to be admitted. Doors aren't something he wrote about, so this is his idea applied.
Freud: locked doors and creaking hinges
In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud calls opening locked doors and slipping into narrow spaces among the commonest sexual symbols, and he read one man's dream of a closed little house between two palaces, its door pushed open by his wife, that way.[5] Keep it in mind if your door dream carried desire or curiosity. He also repeats an earlier researcher's list of sounds that turn into dream scenes, in which the creaking of a door becomes burglars breaking into the house, so a door that was really banging or creaking while you slept may be all the "unsafe at home" dream needed.
Other readings
Calvin Hall, a psychologist whose coding system became the standard way to score dream content, noticed that inner prohibitions often show up in dreams as obstacles: walls, curbs, braking a car, locked doors.[6] A locked door can be your own "no" as much as somebody else's.
The biblical and spiritual meaning of doors in dreams
Doors in the Bible
The Bible uses the door as an invitation. "Knock, and it shall be opened unto you," says Jesus in Matthew,[2] and in Revelation he says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock".[3] In both, the person inside has to answer.
Questions to ask about your door dream
Questions like these sort out which reading fits.
- Was the door open, closed, locked, or broken?
- Were you going in, coming out, or keeping something out?
- Whose door was it, and what was behind it?
- What chance, or change, is in front of you right now?
- Who is knocking in your life, and do you want to let them in?
Oniri asks a few questions like these before it reads your dream, because a door you can't open and a door you can't close mean nearly opposite things.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to dream about a door you can't open?
A door that won't open usually points to something you want and can't reach yet, like a job, a relationship or an answer. It can also be a part of yourself you've closed off. Ask whether you had the key, because a door you could open but didn't is about hesitation more than a barrier.
What does it mean when someone knocks on your door in a dream?
A knock is something asking to come in: news, a person, a feeling or a decision you've been putting off. If you opened the door, you may be ready to face it. If you hid or held the door shut, ask what you're trying to keep out.
What do doors mean in the Bible?
The Bible uses doors often. Jesus says 'knock, and it shall be opened unto you', and in Revelation he stands at the door and knocks. Both use the door as an invitation that the person inside has to answer.
