Hair is the part of your body you change most on purpose. You cut it, color it, grow it out and shave it off, and in many families and religions it comes with rules about who you are and who you belong to. So when hair goes wrong in a dream, it rarely feels trivial. Dreaming about hair is usually about strength, about how you come across to other people, and about how much control you have over your own life.
Two things shape the reading. One is what happened to your hair, and the other is who did it, since hair falling out by itself is a different dream from a haircut someone forced on you, and pulling an endless hair from your mouth is different again.
The dream dictionary
Dreaming about hair is usually about strength, how you come across to others, and how much control you feel you have. Hair falling out points to a fear of losing power, looks or control, while cutting your hair points to change, a fresh start or a loss you're choosing.

What dreaming about hair means
Hair grows about a centimeter a month, falls out in the shower, and is one of the first things people notice about you. Those facts sit behind the main readings.
Strength and vitality
Thick, healthy hair is an old picture of youth and strength, and "letting your hair down" means relaxing. If your hair was full and beautiful in the dream, you may be feeling strong, attractive or free, and hair flowing in the wind often points to feeling like yourself again after months of feeling like someone else.
Image and identity
Hair is the part of your look you rebuild every morning in front of the mirror, so it carries more of your public face than most of the body does. A dream about a new hairstyle, or hair that won't do what you want, is often about the image you're trying to project and whether it still fits.
Control and stress
"Tearing your hair out" is about stress, and hair dreams often come in hard weeks. Hair you can't tame, can't wash or can't stop losing tends to mirror a situation that's slipping out of your hands. Is something taking more effort to hold together than it used to? Are you the one everyone leans on right now?
Dreaming about your hair falling out
This is by far the most searched hair dream, and it's close to the dream of teeth falling out, which about one in five people remember having.[1] Hair coming out in your hands or in clumps on the pillow is usually a fear of losing something, like your looks, your youth, your power or your grip on a situation. Women have this dream often, tied to how much of being seen as attractive is bound up with hair, and men often have it as the hairline starts to move. It's also a common stress dream, and in waking life stress can make hair shed a few months later. If it's happening for real, see a doctor. If it's only in the dream, look at where you feel you're losing ground.
Dreaming about cutting your hair
A haircut is change, and the meaning depends on who held the scissors. Cutting your own hair is taking control, a fresh start, often after a breakup or before a new job (plenty of people do exactly that when they're awake). Cutting it short points to shedding something heavy. Having it cut by someone else, or against your will, is about another person shaping you or taking your power. In many cultures people cut their hair in grief, and Job shaves his head when he hears his children have died,[2] so a haircut dream after a loss can be mourning. If it was a hairdresser, ask who in your life gets to decide how you look and live.
Dreaming about pulling hair out of your mouth
Pulling a long hair out of your mouth or throat, and finding it never ends, is a strangely common dream. It's usually about words, something you need to say that's stuck, or something you said that you'd like to take back. It can also be physical, a dry throat or a real hair on your pillow. If you finally got it all out, you may be close to saying what you've held in.
Dreaming about long hair or hair growing
Long hair, or hair growing fast in a dream, is about time and strength, and the feeling decides which. It often points to growth, a part of you coming back after a hard period, or patience paying off. If the hair grew too long, tangled and heavy, the dream may be about something you've let grow without tending, a habit or a resentment you've never cut back.

Dreaming about gray hair
Finding gray hair in a dream is usually about age and what it brings. For some it's fear of getting older, for others pride, since Proverbs calls gray hair "a crown of glory".[3] It's also about stress, as in "you're giving me gray hairs". What has aged you lately? Or what have you grown wiser about?
Dreaming about lice or bugs in your hair
Lice are a childhood memory for many people, the itch and the fine comb, and the dream often brings back that mix of shame and fuss. Bugs in your hair point to something that has got into your head and keeps bothering you, a worry or a person. "Nit-picking" comes from removing lice eggs, so the dream can also be about someone criticizing every small thing. Picking lice out of someone else's hair is about caring for them, or fixing their problems for them.
Dreaming about washing or dyeing your hair
Washing your hair is clearing your head, rinsing out a person, a worry or a bad week. Dyeing it is changing how you're seen, trying on a new image, or covering something you don't want shown, like gray or a past you'd rather hide. If the color went wrong, you may worry that a change you've made doesn't suit you.
Dreaming about hair according to Jung and Freud
Both men have something to say about hair, one about the face you show and the other about power.
Jung: hair and the persona
In Jung's terms the persona is the social mask, the role you play for others, and in dreams it shows up as costumes, uniforms and masks.[4] Hair isn't on his list. Applied to it, a haircut someone else gives you, or hair that won't stay as you styled it, is the mask being adjusted by another hand or slipping on its own. The question he'd add is whether the face you've been wearing still fits the person underneath.
Freud: hair and castration
Hair is one of the few symbols where Freud's list speaks directly. He read baldness and having your hair cut, like teeth falling out, as symbols of castration.[5] In his terms a dream of losing your hair is about losing power, and particularly sexual power, disguised so it gets past you while you sleep. He'd still want to know what your hair means to you before applying the symbol.
The biblical and spiritual meaning of hair in dreams
Hair is a sign of strength, mourning and honor in the texts of more than one tradition.
Hair in the Bible and the Talmud
In the Book of Judges, Samson has never cut his hair, and his strength lies in it. Delilah has his head shaved while he sleeps on her knees, and his strength leaves him. Then, in prison, his hair begins to grow again.[6] A hair dream read through Samson is about where your strength lies, who you've trusted with it, and whether it's growing back. The Talmud, which anchors rabbinic Judaism, sees that doubleness in shaving itself. The rabbis point to Joseph shaving to leave prison and rise, and to Samson losing his strength, and elsewhere the same tractate calls a shaved head a good sign.[7][8]
Hair in the Agni Purana
The Agni Purana, one of the Hindu Puranas, has a chapter of dream omens in which the appearance of gray hair is a good sign and shaving the head a bad one.[9] The lists are omens written for a particular reader, and they contradict each other, so they show what the text held and decode nothing in your dream.
Questions to ask about your hair dream
Your own hair, and your history with it, decide what the dream is about, so start with these.
- What happened to your hair: falling out, cut, growing, dirty, changing color?
- Did you choose it, or did someone do it to you?
- Who was in the dream, and who held the scissors or the brush?
- What part of your image or your strength feels at risk right now?
- Have you had a stressful few months?
Oniri reads hair dreams against details like who did the cutting and how you felt in the mirror afterwards, which is what separates a fresh start from a loss.
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to dream about hair?
Most hair dreams are about strength, image or control. Thick, healthy hair tends to point to feeling strong and attractive, hair falling out to worry about losing that, and a haircut to change. Whether you chose what happened to your hair, or someone did it to you, is the detail that matters most.
Does dreaming of hair falling out mean I'm ill?
No. The dream reflects worry, not your health. It's common during stressful times, and stress can make real hair shed a few months later, so the two sometimes show up together. If you're actually losing hair, see a doctor, since most causes are treatable.
What does it mean to dream about someone doing your hair?
It usually points to trust and care, or to someone shaping how you look to the world. A loved one gently brushing or braiding your hair is often about feeling looked after. Someone cutting or styling it against your wishes is about another person having too much say in your life.
What does hair mean in a dream biblically?
In the Bible hair is linked to strength and devotion. Samson's strength lies in his uncut hair and leaves him when Delilah has it shaved, and Proverbs calls gray hair a crown of glory. People in mourning shaved their heads, as Job does. A biblical reading tends to tie hair to strength, honor and grief.
