How to Be a Better Lucid Dreamer

Lucid dreaming is an intriguing phenomenon that holds immense potential for those who have already had some experience with it. However, for some individuals, their lucid dreams may be short-lived, causing them to wake up almost immediately, or they may struggle with dream control. In order to enhance and prolong the lucid dreaming experience, it is crucial to make adequate preparations beforehand.

Preparing for a Lucid Dream#

Preparing for a lucid dream begins with having a dream goal in mind. It is essential to plan out what you want to do and accomplish once you become lucid in the dream world. Setting clear intentions helps focus your mind and increases the likelihood of achieving specific dream-related objectives. Also, it is important to release all expectations. Try not to expect instant results, as frustration can hinder progress. Maintaining a calm and patient mindset allows for a more enjoyable and rewarding lucid dreaming experience.

Meet Other Dreamers#

To stay motivated and connected with a like-minded community, joining groups or forums dedicated to lucid dreaming can be incredibly beneficial. Sharing experiences, tips, and challenges with others fosters a sense of support and encouragement. Get inspired to deepen your practice.

Meditation & Mindfulness#

Start a meditation practice and become overall more mindful throughout the day. Incorporating a relaxing evening routine into your daily life aids in setting intentions for lucid dreaming. This routine prepares your mind for the dream state and can improve the chances of having a lucid dream.

Starting a meditation practice can cultivate awareness and presence, which carries over into the dream state. Being mindful in your waking life and regularly conducting reality checks further aids lucidity.

It's worth knowing what the research does and doesn't show here, because the popular version overstates it. A study approached the question three ways at once. Long-term meditators did report more lucid dreams than people who had never meditated, and mindfulness traits correlated with lucid dream frequency. But when the researchers ran a randomised controlled trial of an 8-week mindfulness course, it produced no increase in lucid dreaming.[1]

Read that together and the honest conclusion is: meditation looks like a long game, not an eight-week hack. Separate work also suggests mindfulness relates more strongly to how well you can control a lucid dream than to how often you have one,[2,3] which fits the everyday experience of becoming lucid and immediately losing it in a rush of excitement.

So meditate because it makes you a calmer, more attentive person and expect lucidity as a slow side effect, rather than treating it as a two-month protocol.

On supplements#

You'll see mugwort tea and vitamin B6 recommended everywhere. They deserve very different levels of confidence.

Vitamin B6 has an actual randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. 100 people took 240 mg before bed for five nights. B6 significantly increased how much dream content they recalled, but did not affect vividness, bizarreness or colour, and the trial didn't measure lucidity. Better recall genuinely helps lucid dreaming, so this is a plausible indirect aid. Two caveats: 240 mg is far above dietary levels, and the group given a general B complex instead reported worse sleep quality and more tiredness on waking.[4]

Mugwort has essentially no controlled evidence for dreaming. It's tradition, not data. That doesn't make it useless, but it does mean you're experimenting rather than following research.

Talk to a healthcare professional before taking anything at supplement doses, particularly if you're pregnant or on medication.

Dream Stabilization#

Once in a lucid dream, there are several tips to keep in mind to make the experience more vivid and prevent it from fading away. Remaining calm and composed is crucial, as rushing to exert your ego or control over the dream can disrupt its stability. Taking a moment to observe and fully immerse yourself in the dream environment can heighten the overall experience. It is also important to treat dream characters with love and respect, as they are essentially manifestations of your own consciousness. They are stranger than that framing suggests, though: studies of dream characters in lucid dreams find that dreamers routinely experience them as autonomous, with their own apparent intentions and refusals, rather than as puppets.[5] Expect to be surprised by them, and expect them to be unhelpful at anything requiring a definite answer.

Confidence plays a significant role in dream control. It is important to be assertive in giving commands to the dream environment or characters. Weak commands tend to yield weak results, so approaching dream control with confidence increases the likelihood of achieving desired outcomes.

Prospective Memory#

Strengthening your prospective memory, or the ability to think about doing something in the future, helps reinforce the intention to become lucid in your dreams. This is the same muscle you flex when you take a mental note of what to get at the grocery store.

This is the mechanism the best-supported induction technique runs on. MILD works by loading a prospective memory as you fall asleep, and in a large study, reality testing on its own did relatively little while reality testing combined with MILD and a brief wake-back-to-bed produced a marked increase in lucid dreaming. Participants who fell asleep quickly after the MILD rehearsal did best of all.[6]

Worth calibrating expectations too: a systematic review of induction methods concluded that no technique yet reliably produces lucidity on demand.[7] Combinations beat single techniques, and consistency beats intensity.

You can build prospective memory by setting yourself future reminders to do reality checks throughout the day, ideally tied to things that actually appear in your dreams.

Dream Journaling#

Maintaining a dream journal is an invaluable tool for improving lucid dreaming skills. Reading back on old dreams allows you to identify potential triggers for lucidity and rewrite dreams as if you were lucid. Recording dream signs and using them as cues for reality checks can help in recognizing when you are dreaming. Personalizing reality checks to align with your dream signs makes them more effective. Utilizing apps like Oniri can provide further assistance in analyzing and sorting your dreams, aiding in the exploration of patterns and themes. Conclusion#

In conclusion, lucid dreaming is a skill that can be learned and improved by anyone willing to put in consistent effort and practice. Similar to working out at the gym, dedicating time and energy to lucid dreaming yields tangible results. With proper preparation, mindfulness, dream journaling, and a supportive community, one can enhance their lucid dreaming abilities and embark on incredible journeys within the realm of dreams.
