Stairs are the plainest picture of progress a dream can find, so they tend to turn up when something in your life is changing level. Dreaming about stairs usually means you're working your way toward something (a promotion, a recovery, a better relationship) or you're afraid of slipping back from where you are. The direction you were going is the first clue, and the effort it took is the second.

The rest comes from the stairs themselves and from you. A grand staircase in a house you've never seen is a different dream from the narrow steps down to your grandmother's cellar, and stairs you climb with ease say something an endless flight doesn't. What you were reaching for in your life that week usually settles which reading is yours.

The dream dictionary

Dreaming about stairs usually points to a change of level in your life, either progress you're working toward or a step down you're afraid of. Which way you were going matters most, and how hard the climb felt shows what the change is costing you.

What dreaming about stairs means

A staircase breaks a climb into equal steps you take one at a time, and from the bottom you can often see how many are left. It also joins two floors that do different jobs in a house. Most stair dreams lean on one of those facts.

Progress you're working for

English talks about careers and recoveries in staircase terms already ("a step in the right direction", "one step at a time", "taking it to the next level"). If you were going up steadily, the dream is often about a goal you're making real headway on, even if it doesn't feel that way during the day. Being out of breath near the top is worth noticing, because it can mean the progress is real but costing you more than you've admitted.

Moving between parts of your life

Most of us keep the private rooms upstairs and the shared ones downstairs, so stairs can be about moving between two sides of your life, or between two social levels. Think of a new job among people who seem more senior, a move that feels like a step down, or being "kicked upstairs" into a role with a better title and less to do.

A look inward

Going down is the other half of the picture, and often the more interesting one. Stairs that lead to a cellar or a basement often read as a move inward, toward older memories or feelings you keep below the rooms you live in. Jung read one of his own dreams this way, as you'll see below.

Dreaming about falling down stairs

Falling down the stairs is the stair dream people search for most, and it's often the one that jolts you awake. Many of these come from a hypnic jerk, the sudden twitch your body can make as you drift off, which the sleeping brain likes to explain with a missed step. If it happened right as you were falling asleep, that may be all it was. Falling is also one of the commonest things we dream about, with 73.8% of students in one large survey remembering at least one.[1]

When the fall comes later in the night and in the middle of a story, it tends to be about losing ground. You may fear a demotion, a relapse after months of doing well, or a relationship sliding back to where it was. Did you get up at the bottom, or lie there? People who pick themselves up in the dream are often less worried than they think they are.

Dreaming about climbing stairs

An easy climb, taken at a steady pace, is one of the more encouraging stair dreams. It usually comes when you're making progress you can feel, and the work in your legs is your effort, pictured. But if the stairs were steep, or you had to stop and rest, look at what's tiring you out on the way up. And if you were running up them, ask what you're in such a hurry to reach, or to get away from.

Dreaming about going down stairs

Going down calmly is a different dream from going down in a panic. A slow, deliberate descent often comes when you're stepping back from something on purpose (a demanding job, a social scene, an ambition you've outgrown), or when you're thinking about the past. But rushing down, or being sent down, is closer to the fear of losing status. If the stairs ended in a basement, the dream may be pointing you toward something you've stored away and not looked at for a while.

Dreaming about stairs that never end

Some staircases in dreams keep going however long you climb, or loop back to the floor you started on. The artist M. C. Escher drew exactly this in his 1960 print "Ascending and Descending", where monks walk a staircase that climbs forever and never gets higher. The dream version is about effort without arrival, like a job with no next step or a degree that keeps adding a year, or a goal you reached that didn't feel the way you hoped.

Dreaming about broken stairs

A step that gives way under you, a gap in the staircase or a flight with no railing is about trust in what's carrying you. Something you're relying on to get you up (a plan, a loan, a person's promise) may feel less solid than it looks. A missing railing may be about climbing without the support you'd like from the people around you.

Dreaming about an escalator

An escalator does the climbing for you, which makes it a strange kind of progress. Riding one up calmly can mean you're being carried along by something you didn't have to fight for, like a company growing around you or a partner's career. But being stuck on one going the wrong way, or running up a down escalator to stay in place, is the picture of working hard just to keep what you have. Unlike an elevator, you can at least see where it goes.

Dreaming about stairs according to Jung and Freud

Stairs show up in some of the most famous writing on dreams, and the readings pull in very different directions.

Jung: the stairway down to the cellar

Jung's own staircase went down. In a 1909 dream of a house he took to be his, he descended from a furnished upper floor and a medieval ground floor by a stone stair to a cellar from Roman times, and from there by a narrow flight into a cave holding bones and two human skulls.[3] Each flight took him further back, and he came to read the floors as layers of the mind, with each step down reaching something older and less personal. That is why a staircase going down, in a dream, so often gets read as a way into yourself.

Freud: steps and the climb

Freud listed steps, ladders and staircases, and climbing up or down them, among the symbols for sex.[2] He said it plainly. He still began from your own associations and treated a fixed symbol as second, so he'd have wanted to know which staircase it was, who lived at the top and what you got up to on it as a child.

The biblical and spiritual meaning of stairs in dreams

Stairs have one famous moment in scripture, and it happens in a dream.

Jacob's ladder in the Bible

In Genesis, Jacob falls asleep with a stone for a pillow and dreams of a ladder (newer translations often say a stairway) set on the earth and reaching to heaven, with angels going up and down.[4] When he wakes he calls the place the gate of heaven. If your stairs felt holy or full of light, that's the story many people have in mind.

Questions that change the reading of a stairs dream

The same staircase can mean opposite things for two people, so go back to the details before you settle on a reading.

  • Were you going up, going down, or stuck somewhere in the middle?
  • Did the climb feel easy, hard or impossible?
  • What was at the top, and what was at the bottom?
  • Was anyone on the stairs with you, ahead of you or blocking the way?
  • Where in your life are you trying to get to the next level right now?

Before reading a dream, Oniri asks about details like these, so the staircase gets read against your week and the floor you were actually trying to reach.

Frequently asked questions

What do dreams about stairs mean?

Most stair dreams are about moving between levels in your life. Going up tends to mean effort and progress, going down a step back or a look inward, and falling a fear of losing ground. How you felt on the stairs tells you which one is yours.

Is dreaming about falling down stairs a bad sign?

No. It doesn't predict a fall or a failure. It often comes from the twitch your body makes as you drop off to sleep, and when it doesn't, it points to a worry about slipping back from something you've worked for.

What does it mean to dream of stairs in the Bible?

The best-known stairs in the Bible are in Jacob's dream in Genesis, where a ladder (some translations say a stairway) reaches from earth to heaven with angels going up and down it. The passage describes a link between God and Jacob. It doesn't give a rule for what your own stairs mean.

Quick Analysis

Your dream seems to reflect feelings of fear, paranoia, and trust issues, particularly around friends and social situations. Running around the restaurant could symbolise an attempt to escape or avoid situations where you feel threatened or uncomfortable. The presence of your family and boyfriend may point to how much their support and protection matter to you.

The moment you confronted the girl who took your money and found common ground in the same bands suggests a desire for resolution, and a hope that conflict can give way to understanding.

Questions

In the dream you were constantly moving, running through the restaurant, never quite settling anywhere. When you woke up, did that restlessness feel familiar to anything happening in your life right now?

Yeah, I’ve been job-hunting for two months and it feels like I can never switch off or relax.

You confronted the girl who took your money, and yet you discovered you liked the same bands. Is there someone you’re in conflict with who you also feel an unexpected closeness to?

My older sister. We argue about everything, but she’s also the only one who really gets me.
91/1000

Your family and your boyfriend appeared as protectors in the dream. Right now, do you feel able to lean on them, or is their support something you find yourself missing?

Mostly yes, though I haven’t actually told them how stressed I’ve been lately.
